Just some input...I recently watched a line-up of better-known photographers from Out of Chicago in two different webinars...and they all pursued this softer focus on florals. It is more a style than anything else and, as such, may not appeal to everybody. But I particularly liked Anne Belmont's work, and the style really appeals to me. Floral photography is about feelings and emotions as much as it is about technical perfection. |

I understand what you are trying to do, but I still like the softness of the 2nd flower behind it, giving it added context. It was part of a double-flowered stem, and leaving the second flower in works for me but may not work for everyone. |

Hi Keith, no, I didn't need to make it softer...it was done in camera like this. I don't always find that taking an image and forcing it to conform to a style by lowering different settings looks or feels as natural, but that's just me.

You have captured magnificent detail and contours. Great lighting on the subject and it is nice and sharp in both detail and the edge and sides. Since you were trying to get a shadow, I would say it was successful to your goals, although I personally am not crazy about shadows with such a lovely subject. The background also fights with your rock, being non-complementary in coloring. Did you consider changing out the background? With such a clean image, you could make it any color you choose...maybe consider playing around with the background color a bit? This would make an awesome high-key project. |

What a great macro capture! It doesn't feel flat to me at all; in fact, I feel that you've got beautiful lighting on it. Wonderful white balance, perfect balance of lights and darks to present great contour and texture. There isn't anything I would change on this, Tom. The lighting feels soft and pleasant. Makes me want to reach out and feel those petals, even if it is just a weed!! I also really like the composition with the flower leaning just slightly diagonally-oriented. Nice shot, Tom! |

BTW, these flowers are the size of a dime and on long, paper thin stalks. I did very little except adjust white and black points, remove one lighter spot on the background and adjust the detail in some localized places.
Also, I would like to say that I will miss Bill Foy, our former administrator and an all-around great guy and wonderful photographer. He contributed so much to my growth in PSA, and I will miss interacting with him.

Good, sharp focus and nice lighting...very well-balanced to show great depth and texture. Cool how you got the red, white the blue without adding any background, but I would actually like to see it without the red and blue! If you hadn't said it was from the rock, I wouldn't have known, and it seems out of whack with the image of the rock textures, being a different color, different texture, and very linear, abrupt progression into the red and blue. |

This is a beautiful shot with a pleasing Depth of Field. On a breezy morning not easy to do, esp. at 1/100!
My only suggestion is that I see a slight overall green tint. Maybe adjust the temperature a bit?
It's absolutely a lovely shot! |
