Yes, it's odd but the same plane as the eye was in focus sharper elsewhere. I did feel the eye was sharp enough although I would like it to be sharper. I can see the detail of light on it's near eye but the edges of the eye itself are soft. It's a conundrum! I agree with you. Fortunately, the judges liked what they saw. 😊|

First off, let me say how fantastic the dog sled picture was! Competition worthy for sure!
I like this floral image and feel it would work best with some better lighting. I feel some areas are nearly void of detail, yet there isn't a high level of shadows. There is some, though, in the center, which really feels good to me. The other issue for me personally is focus. The out of focus is dead center, so it feels uncomfortable. It is too important a part of the overall beauty of the flower here and, being on the same plane as an area that is sharply focused, it detracts for me. F2.8 is just way too narrow a DOF for most flowers. F5.6 to f8 is my suggestion. |

Very cool, and I like it as is. Yes, there is the suspicion that it is dead, but it isn't so apparent that it detracts from the sharpness and detail of the capture. Kudos to you! |

I agree with the other comments about the yellow, and I think you've caught the dew drops perfectly. They feel sharp and they stand out well from the background. If possible, could you crop to the upper left quadrant? The bubble clarity against the leaves is best there. It would eliminate some of the distracting elements. |

The use of monochrome really worked well! As you pointed out, the head is soft, creating tension for me as a viewer. But fantastic capture of the body! You could have tried focus stacking or adjusted your camera angle to come down on a more parallel angle from above if you couldn't get to the other side to shoot. But I think it's a nice shot. |

Great job for getting to know your equipment! Focus stacking, lighting…you'll get more comfortable. The softness can work for you, but I would suggest starting with a flower or weed with less depth. An even or shallower focus plane will be more easy to control. |
