Bernie, I agree with what Tom did! Removing the background is just the perfect solution! |

Wow, that is a beautiful shell! Stuart, I go back to my initial input...I'd love to see you do the same thing but with the entire shell! |

Okay, here's my take on the red pencil...out of focus is okay if behind the main, in-focus subject. If in front, it tends to be hard on the viewing. That isn't a hard and fast rule, just my own personal feeling. And 1 or 3 is better than 2, in focus or out of focus. |

Hmmmm…monstrous, yes! I saw that right away, although I had no idea what it was. I think the teeth lack necessary definition for my taste. I felt like it lacks sharpness or definition in the lower half shadows but I do feel edge softness and maybe artifacts on the teeth edges. My two cents. I'd love to see what you could do with this in Photoshop, maybe applying liquefy to the teeth and an art filter of some type? |

Pat, I love this!! Great composition and lighting. The DOF really works for the black pencil. I think the red pencil is superfluous. Also, odd numbers of objects are more comfortable for me. I didn't get the impression that you were trying to focus stack and, quite frankly, what you did is a much more interesting image than a pencil in full focus. Your treatment pulls my eye in. Great job, both technically on the black pencil and aesthetically. |

Your capture is spot-on, so if a technical challenge is the goal, you did great!! Compositionally it doesn't work for me. I like the idea of adding a waves texture or even sand, but cutting the shell off can't be overcome. I'd love to see the entire shell. |

Welcome to our group! What a difficult flower to work with! Your Spider Lily is very sharp, as expected at f19. I am puzzled though with the lens used-it could have been a close-up, but it is such a small part of the total frame. My suggestion would be to use a macro lens or else use that 18-300 to really fill that frame with the flower. Because of the f stop you chose, the background competes with your delicate flower. But to come in closer, you will lose the protruding parts. So perhaps an easier flower shape? |
