I must say that this is the best R.S. image I've ever seen. From your lighting on the wings to the amazing clarity on every part of the bird, this is pleasing to view. Great contrast between the bird and the sky; and I actually really like the subdued blue of the sky when combined with the red/pink of the bird. The placement also feels perfect to me. I would be proud to be the maker of this image! But then, why am I not surprised that you captured this so perfectly? |

The major impact for me comes from the wonderful lighting you've caught and the clarity of every part of this image. Interesting image compared to all the ones I've viewed--this having the eye just at the line of the water. For me personally as a viewer, it presents a bit of discomfort, along with the wing reflection in the foreground leaving the image. However, my eye was, in fact, drawn right to that area, trying to resolve whether I could see an eye there. I must say I'm torn on this. |

I couldn't believe it when I read you didn't use a flash OR a tripod. The lighting and sharpness are so stunning. The way the blue backs up the orange center without competing with it really gives it a major impact from first glance. Everything has wonderful clarity, and the composition is wonderful and works well for this unusual flower. You really nailed this--I suppose you could try to sharpen the yellow, but it would also be fine left as is. I looked at it several times and never found any distracting elements for myself as a viewer. Beautiful. |

Sharon, from the reflections in the water to the subtle variations of a limited number of complementary colors, you have captured this perfectly. It gives me a feeling of peace when I view it, and I can almost imagine the sounds of the water lapping gently at the shore. I don't see anything that I would change about it. I would happily hang this in my home, or in a gallery. What a lovely, perfect capture! |

This feels like a very balanced image in terms of composition and color--it feels good to me as a viewer the way the blue sky and the orange and brown overtones of the landscape come together. The perspective you used gives it wonderful composition and brings life to the water....which you have also captured at a wonderful setting on motion. It surprised me to see that you were at 1/6400, because the water is both frozen and silky in its movement. Great job!! |

Wow, what an interesting idea! The clarity and sharpness of the entire image gives it great impact; the detail of the iris really appeals to me as a viewer. I like that you didn't try to soothe out the redness--we see a lot of stunningly-made-up eyes in images, but this is the real McCoy...the eyes of someone who has been staring at a computer! Perfectly balanced composition and wonderful lighting. I love this image! |

The texture of your leaves is really beautiful, esp. that one to the right of your flowers. I can see the difficulty that would be presented by balance--the flower on the far left was cut off at the tip, and if you remove the bottom, it will be very heavily divided between the flowers on one side, and the leaves on the other side. You said you took several photos....I would love to see another perspective on the same subject, maybe placing more emphasis on the flowers as a main subject? |

Bill, this is a phenomenal image! The black-and-white gives your insect maximum impact, bringing out the size of its eyes relative to its body. It also helps to emphasize the insects details for me as a viewer. Compositionally, my eye is drawn immediately to the insect, where it stays. The wide tonal range from black to very white really works for this image, too. Bravo! Contest-worthy in my opinion. Great capture! |
