Very cool action shot. The wideness of the bird's mouth, along with how it is shaped, provides light humour to this image. I think I would like to see the bird itself stand out more from the background--it feels to me a bit dark around the edges of the bird. Compositionally, it feels good, with good leading lines. Would there be any way to cut off a small slice from the bottom and add in the same amount to the top above the bird's head? Something about where his head falls in the frame feels disturbing to my eye. I thought maybe if there was more space over his head, it would make my eye feel less like it is searching up the bird's body. |

The simplicity in the number of colors and the minimum of clutter gives this a spectacular impact for me when I view it. The beauty and frigidity of the day are both caught in this, along with how startlingly bright these birds can be. Having a neutral background really works for this image, in my opinion. The bird is sharp and clear, with great feather detail, and the crop feels just right to me. If I had to say one thing I would work on, it would be to bring up the details on the eye area ever so slightly. Or leave it alone. For me, I think it is fine, but I always like to see the eyes. |

This is a fantastic tree! You have caught all the detail of the bark, and the colors are very complementary! To my eye, it is very, very dark, and I don't know if it is my monitor. The blue is darker on the right? I don't see the flash, which is a good thing. And I know from your comments that it is taken after sunset, so I assume it was getting dark. Would love to know how you do in the competition with this? |

This is a beautiful capture of the landscape, John. It feels bright and crisp to me, but not artificially so. The way the shoreline leads in feels great to me when viewing it, in addition to the foreground plants which anchor my eye right at the front before leading me into the image. The shadow detail is spot on. Especially the trees. Great image, John!!!

I immediately liked the balance of this photo--the horse stands out well from the background, and the different layers of foreground, middle ground and background of trees worked well for me as a viewer. I see why you tried a warming filter...it felt to me like it needs a little POP, but not enough to discount the nice capture you got! I wondered if you tried setting your white point a little higher? Maybe it is the overall darkness of early morning that is absorbing the light from it. |

Always a great impact when the animal is engaged in activity as this one is! The composition really enhances your image, the way the bird is sitting in the center of all the curved leaves. I also, as a viewer, really like the contrast between the foreground/subject and the background. There isn't anything I would change about it, except maybe a last little clarity or sharpening. It's a nice image! |

You are right; I should explain that there was also lumber laying around the yard and, although I did my best to shoot around it, the yard was icey, and the horse wanted to nip me the entire time. When I processed it, I tried several approaches....one being to crop the sides. But it felt too tight. This was my compromise. And I wasn't going to let him get within nipping distance of me!! |

Denise, I agree, you sure nailed it! I love this image!!! As a viewer, the composition feels very comfortable and brings my eye to rest exactly where it should. The color depth and combination of colors is stunning, as well as the placement of the leaves and the sharpness of the veins. Really beautiful, Denise! |

The depth of the colors in this give it a lovely impact on me as the viewer. I especially like the soft shadows alternating with the lighter areas--you didn't blow anything out, which is hard on something so reflective. The other thing that works beautifully is the way you composed it, with the lines of the shell working the viewer's eye inward along the shell. Gorgeous shot! |

Wow, Bill, you picked one of the hardest flowers to capture!! 2.8 is great for the overall image...and this flower may need a much larger aperture, even on that lens. The other difficult thing is doing a macro using anything other than a flash ring or a very diffused light source. Not sure what your set-up was, but I think you did a great job with the equipment you were using. It does evoke a very peaceful holiday feeling. Have fun with the new lens and Merry Christmas! |

Feels perfect to me--sharp and crisply in focus, lovely soft background that doesn't compete with the flower, terrific composition. I really like how the background shades from green into almost a soft teal as it moves up, but with nothing obvious about it. Your image has a wonderful sense of balance to me. Great job, Ginger!!

The color, texture, lighting and subtle shading of this all combining to give it a pleasing impact for me. There isn't a thing I would change about it! I especially love the variety of colors and how well they pull together, along with the superb lighting. It pops with texture and color without being overwhelming! |
