Thank you for your comments and input. I agree that it still seems a little bit soft in areas. Back to the drawing board! |

I did, Sharon, and that's where I became confused about whether it was the shadow of the wing, since it goes from stark white on the left to sudden light blue.
The tail isn't as stark, but I thought I would mention it.

Maybe Vibrance? It has beautiful yellow tones already. I am honestly not sure where the pop needs to come from?

I have always loved these images with the foreground stretching its way into the scene. You have done a great job with this one--it feels very natural and comfortable, even with HDR (which can sometimes be a bit quirky). I would try to straighten those trees, maybe with the guided option in LR? But the leading line of the log (like my alliteration there?) gives it even more impact toward the front of your image. Great job!! |

Very good capture! Your depth of field is wonderful; the eye is sharp and reflects the catchlight. I would like to see a little more "POP" or brightness overall (maybe just a bit of warmth in the tones?), and I do not think the shadows are too dark. You had a quick opportunity, and you took it while still using great settings. I think this is a lovely image. |

Fabulous shot! Interesting to compare notes on eclipse-shooting. I had the same problem with tracking as you did. Yours is one of the better ones I've seen. Someone in my club actually had a set-up which used a laptop to keep the tracking in place, and he got amazing shots, of course. Specialized software. We had totality and clear skies, but I eventually made the decision to watch and take what I could from the camera. Beautiful job!!! And the clouds enhance the feeling of near-totality! |

Soothing, pleasant landscape with sharp and very natural colors, great detail in the trees and water reflection. I do notice the glow, but it doesn't figure strongly for me. I would like to see something to direct my eye to somewhere specific, but technically, you did a fine job. And for myself, I like the moon but would like to see the two white lines in the sky removed. Nice shot!

Sharon, there is one thing I noticed right as I was closing the image. What is causing the huge contrast on the forward wing--it goes from white to a very strong blue. It doesn't match the background and it can't possibly be a shadow, could it? I think that area and the tail feathers could use some color adjustment, softening or something? |

I liked the first image just fine, but boy, did that second adjusted image really pop!! Beautiful shot and treatment. I love the motion of the wings that you have captured. It is very appealing; with the addition of more light in the eyes on the revised version, you have really nailed it! The reflection didn't bother me, but what judges think is often a mystery.... |

Thanks, Sharon! I was having a senior moment at the time...couldn't come up with the word antlers~~! Despite the fact that Bellingham is like the deer capital of the world these days, LOL!!

You are right; I have since learned that f8 to f11 would be best wherever possible. The shadow is from his own "horns?" But as you will see from the original, I lightened it considerably. My concern is that at times you start to get a weird tone when you lighten too much, maybe from noise?

I actually did this effect in-camera but was just reading about a method of combining two images of the same scene--one sharp and the other treated with Gaussian Blur in Photoshop before combining the two images. I plan to try that.

Very nice capture. I esp. like your lighting! Very sharp where it counts, with soft, pleasing background and simplicity in colors. A peaceful composition. My only suggestion would be to crop a bit off the (viewer's) right-hand side, to make it feel more balanced in the frame. I really like this image, Ginger! |

Wow, what a great capture, esp. considering that it was hand-held at only 1/100 sec! I love how sharp and detailed this little guy is! Cool composition and perfect lighting--it feels even but still gives a sense of depth. Great image!

The color definitely provides punch! I like how you have also captured the lights and shadows. Thinking about your aperture, did you consider trying a smaller aperture to produce a more blurred background? The flower in the background is still fairly strong and defined. Nice sharp capture of the needles and little thingies on top of the needles!!
