All great comments. Yes, I see the blue, particularly by the eye. The hard part about shooting through glass at the zoo is a) sticky little fingerprints of previous occupants and b) trying to change your perspective in tight viewing enclosures. But as a mother myself, this really resonated with me. Thanks for the wonderful feedback. |

I realized quickly that it was a different image than the description, but oh, Mike! I am jealous!! What a great image! I honestly didn't notice the branches at first--they kind of look like horns, but of course, I knew they weren't. I just didn't register them as a viewer. If you are entering a competition, they sometimes won't let you remove those things. But it doesn't detract from the image for me. The fact of capturing the baby sitting on top of mama like that is fantastic, and you did a great job with it!

What a fabulous shot! Unexpected in its composition and perspective, which both work really well for it. I love the minimals colors, with just a variety of shades of green, clear water, and white. Its a very cool image, and I wouldn't do anything else with it, esp. not with bringing down highlights in any way as they work well within this image!

I always love your shots...and I love the subject matter of this one as well. There is something impacting it, and I feel I can see an outline around some parts of the larger bird along his top lines. The kind you sometimes get when sharpening? The other thing is that either the bird is a little soft, or the blur of the water is fighting the bird. It is a wonderful capture, though, as far as action, subject, etc. Lovely colors! |

This has a strong composition and perfect flow to the water. I perceive that it gets a bit darker in the lower right corner, and I'm not sure if that is some intentional vignetting to draw the viewer's eye back toward the center? The only other thing I had a difficult time with was the color cast....it feels very yellow or greenish to me? To ensure it wasn't just me, I checked various areas around the image, including the rocks, and there's a definite color cast. Would this be something Color EFEX and white neutralizer could address? Or just adjust the temperature a bit? Nice image, though! |

Lisa, the first thing I noticed as a viewer was the softness. And I know there are several ways to sharpen, but it will need to be carefully applied as I can already see some artifacts around the insect's edges. I also have used High Pass (make a copy first, on the copy use filter, high pass, then blend mode overlay and then fool with opacity until it looks right (about 75-79% is where I usually end up). Whatever you do, you will definitely need to mask or apply very locally. However, I also liked the composition, background, and color combination very much!

Sharon, having been there, I think you've done a magnificent job of capturing the essence of these Falls. Your image reflects the power of the falls themselves, while showing the beauty of the surrounding area. The crop and composition works well; the colors and range are terrific. I especially like the way you have captured the lighting--I can tell it was just getting light. Beautiful! I would not sharpen it anymore, personally.

Yes, Mike, you are exactly right; the two descriptions got mixed up together.
This was taken in a zoo, and I originally wasn't sure we were allowed to submit images in captivity. So I attached some wild foxes (Mother and Kit) as well, as an alternative.
In this one, I basically had to shoot through glass, from a dark area into another dark area, with a tiny bit of side lighting. I couldn't use flash, so it had to be a very slow shutter speed. That is why the cub's arm shows motion. But I don't dislike the motion--it is batting at its mother's face, which is showing they are actively at play with her, while she is just sitting patiently. |

You know, I think you are both right about the focus. At the time, I was learning from a Macro photographer whose signature is focusing on little interesting parts of plants with a dreamy quality--and I always thought they looked a little out of focus, so that is probably right!!
