This is up on Delta, in BC. There are lots of places to shoot, but given our sucky weather lately, finding a good day without too much ice underfoot has been difficult. The next day after this shot, lots of snow had fallen (and continues to fall), with very icy roads to accompany!

My old stomping grounds; I'm envious. What an unusual treatment for an owl--it reminds me of the monkey/baboon shots. I do like it; especially the way the eyes stand out against a background that recedes somewhat. You've definitely put the light in the right place on your subject. It's very portrait-like, and that works for this shot! The crop is perfect, as is the way you have filled the frame and then darkened down the outside. There isn't anything I would have done differently; I really love the image!

This is an interesting and unusual crop, but for me, it really works for your image. Your capture is crisp, the colors are good, and I love the way the flowers fit in the frame. There is a light bit on the middle-bottom edge that I would suggest you eliminate....its placement will make it easy to do with either Content Aware or even the LR Spot Removal tool. The only other thing I would like to see? Try using the Sponge Tool in Photoshop very, very sparingly to brush in stronger saturation while lightening strategically. I think it will give more depth to your flowers by bringing out certain areas. I really like the image, though! |

One of my favorite subjects! The eyes are perfect--the initial impact takes me right into those amazing eyes. The composition is really a result of the owls feather pattern, which you have captured beautifully. I also have no suggestions for improvement....I love this shot!

Cool image! The impact is a combination for me of the clarity of the spider, the simplicity of the background, and those strands that lead my eye right to Spidey. The one provided by Mike definitely brings out more clarity and contrast in the spider, and softens the background in a really beautiful way, creating more emphasis on the light patterns. This is a dynamic image that I think has alot of wonderful elements in it. |

Always fun to watch these birds come in with their crazy poses! The colors of the background really contribute to the image--the bird itself could be stronger in clarity. It feels to me like you have sharply captured the details of both water and bird. To me, though, the light doesn't bring me to the bird, but rather to the background. I think there needs to be something that focuses the viewer's attention more on the main subject? Some vignetting? |

Interesting shot; there is no single thing that provides immediate impact to me. I like that the eyes are sharp. I also like the compositional boost given by that upper wing curving forward over the birds face--like it is reaching forward. There's good detail in the body of the bird if it can be brought out more? I feel it lacks something that makes it jump from the page--either more light, less shadows, more contrast?

A great name for a great image! I love the mood this image creates--a perfect image for black and white! Your choice of depth of field, clarity in the center degrading out evenly toward the edges, and beautiful mixture of lights and darks over a terrific tonal range all work together to make this a very fine image. The crop works perfectly for your subject. Great job, Denise! I wouldn't change anything about this image. |

Lou, I have looked at your image from far away and from close up....your capture of the bird is sharp, with vibrant colors and good attention to detail. Great use of shadows and highlights.
I keep seeing an artifact of sorts right over its head, like a blue haze? What I think is bothering my eye most, though, is the green in the upper portion, so bright against the rest of the image. It pulls me away from the eye of your bird, an eye which is very nicely done. Can you clone that green so that it is the same hue as the green just below the birds neck? The only other suggestion is that the eye be placed somewhere other than dead-center of your image. |

A lovely image, Ginger! The subtle color in the leaves really brings out the pop in color right in the center. Very sharply captured, with interesting patterns and lines throughout. With this crop, did you consider vignetting the corners at all? Otherwise, I might like to see what it looks like with the long direction cropped off a bit. Not much--just a bit to emphasize the roundness of the succulent. It's a nice shot!

A very interesting Macro...it has an immediate impact created for me by its range of variations on the same basic color. The lighting and clarity have captured the texture and shape of the flaking areas very nicely. The only thing I would change is, if possible, the crop--to eliminate the upper right where it has that white streak which pulls my eye over to it. I love the little embedded ball and would love to see it emphasized by placing it more at a juncture?
