87 Feb 26 Reply Thanks, Jennifer. Still life is scary--the only way to get over the fear is to just do it! And thank you very much for the thoughtful feedback :-) Feb 24th
87 Feb 26 Reply Thanks a lot for your comments, Cindy :-) Feb 10th
87 Feb 26 Reply Thanks a lot, Dale. And good luck with your own foray into still life photography! I've found that it's not as easy as it looks, but I've learned a lot in the process. Feb 7th
87 Feb 26 Reply Yes, they are very scary! Total freedom = total fear of failing! An existential crisis!
The incompleteness of the pan was totally intentional. But there could also be ways of centering the composition around the whole pan. Thank you :-)

87 Feb 26 Reply Thanks, Steve! Yes, I was going for different textures and a certain color palette.
It's interesting that you saw the main subjects as the starfish & the pan. For me, they were the starfish & the star anise. I guess I included too much stuff for that intention to come through. Thanks for the critique :-)

87 Feb 26 Reply Yes, thanks for the clarification. I didn't take your comment the wrong way at all. I think it was very helpful in making me think about paring down other still lifes in the future. Feb 3rd
87 Feb 26 Reply Thanks a lot, Chan. I agree that there is probably too much stuff in this still life. My thinking was for the viewer to look at the relationship between the various star anise pieces and the different starfish & consider variations in size and shape in both, and to have a diagonal composition, but less would probably have made this point better. Thanks for the critique! Feb 2nd
87 Feb 26 Reply Hi Dale, if the colors and the softness reflect your vision of what the image should be, then it's all good. And I'm sorry if I offended you. Won't happen again! Feb 2nd
87 Feb 26 Comment This looks like a blast from the past! I don't know anything about the process of these kinds of conversions, so I won't comment on the technique. But the content of the image gives a good sense of the aging architecture. Feb 2nd
87 Feb 26 Comment What a wonderful experience! I think the image does provide a sense of what it was like to be there. Feb 2nd
87 Feb 26 Comment Beautiful colors! It looks like it was a very peaceful evening. The colors are lovely, but they seem a little oversaturated to me, especially the colors in the sky, so it might be worth playing around with the saturation sliders. But then I wasn't there, and maybe it really did look that intense! The image as a whole looks a little grainy and out-of-focus, but it was RAW, and all your camera settings seem totally fine. Maybe this was a crop out of a larger image? Or maybe it looks like that after it got compressed down to a JPEG? I noticed that my own picture also looks bad on this screen until I shrink it. On the whole, though, this makes me long for those warm days when everything was green and lovely! Feb 2nd
87 Feb 26 Comment I really like the beautiful textures and the old-time feeling in this picture. Feb 2nd
87 Feb 26 Comment Great action shot. I think that splash behind the bird really gives a sense of movement, and the stretched wings and the feet just off the surface of the water add to that sense of action. I also like the brown reflection on the blue water. There's also enough breathing space around the bird and enough space in front of it for it to move into and for the action to seem like it's continuing. It's a great capture. Feb 2nd
87 Feb 26 Comment Beautiful image. I really like the expression on the boy's face and the contrast between the warm and cool colors and the parallel between his clothing and the pillow behind him. The light adds a warm glow to everything. Feb 2nd
