28 Apr 26 Reply I think the lion is so impressive that it will take all the attention so this is just about fussy details. :)
I took your original post and un-dehazed the sky enough to pass. I used a curves adjustment layer with a mask to darken the area around the lion but it didn't need much.
Once discovery I made was that the banding that AnnMarie saw looks to be a function of the JPG compression. Because the pixel dimensions were big (5419x4258), it took a 0 quality setting in the JPG save dialog. This caused banding big time. I reduced the file to 2000 px on the long edge and got away with a 9 quality setting and no banding.

28 Apr 26 Reply Yep, this is one of the great benefits of the group, learning with the help of others eyes and viewpoint. Apr 13th
28 Apr 26 Reply Thanks, Debbie! I hope you have a wonderful time there and bring us back a lot of your own great images. Apr 13th
28 Apr 26 Reply Thanks so much, Firdaus! It felt very special to be there. I won't recognize it without the snow now. Apr 8th
28 Apr 26 Reply Hah! I like the way you think, Kathy! I thought to try taking the sky from the raw image just now. I faded the new sky layer a bit at left edge away from the sun but the clouds look better for it. Apr 8th
28 Apr 26 Reply Thanks, Deb! I agree it was helpful to bring the levels in the sky down. Apr 7th
28 Apr 26 Reply You are so right, Annmarie! The darker blue sky helps make the best of the little bitty clouds, brings in more color and helps keep your eye on the scene. Good call, thanks! Here's an updated file. Apr 6th
28 Apr 26 Comment Nice and sharp for 500mm and I assume hand held! My first thought was here are some friends, so the title is perfect. I think I actually like the darker background as it gives more focus to the bears instead of pulling my eye to the lighter edges.
I am lucky to have a 24" Canon printer and I find it essential to print my better candidates. I can then evaluate and compare images more easily over several days. This often leads to improved edits.

28 Apr 26 Comment Nice, Deb! I think the sepia was a good choice and it simplifies the image. I've been striving for more minimal and simple compositions. My focus struggles between the two points of interest without a clear winner. I took the liberty of playing with the image to make the headstone at left take the most attention. Apr 5th
28 Apr 26 Comment Very cool, Annmarie! I like the way you experiment with flowers. You had one submerged in water that was very creative and made me want to try it. 8 images here? Did you make a vignette or was that part of the images? Apr 5th
28 Apr 26 Comment Nice shot, Kathy! I like the various green colors and the texture of the stone. Moving water is so fun to play with. Were you on a tripod? It looks sharpest at the top right, perhaps more depth of field would have pulled it all in to crisp focus? Apr 5th
28 Apr 26 Comment A living legacy indeed, Firdaus. The colors of dress tell a story in themselves. My eye goes first to the hat on the left and her focus pushes me to the action on the right. Is it staged or can anyone visit and catch these sights? Apr 5th
28 Apr 26 Comment Great capture, Steve! Love the framing, the sharpness and the frozen water drops. Focal length and shutter speed? Did you dehaze in the sky? There is a slight halo around the lion and the trees which is something I always fight when applying filters to the sky. Apr 5th

96 Apr 26 Reply Thanks, Stephen. The place offers so many choices and options! Apr 4th
96 Apr 26 Reply Thanks, Bruce! Apr 4th
96 Apr 26 Reply Thanks for your kind feedback, Rick. There wasn't a lot of color to start with so it only made sense to go with b/w. I appreciate the thought about being my own judge. :) Apr 4th
96 Apr 26 Comment Surely, one of the most beautiful valleys in the world.
This reminds me of a painting I have, kind of abstract, called Inside the Falls. I think the rock formation helps you out, anchoring it. My eyes went down the falls, stopped with the rock and then followed the way the water clung to the edges stair stepping back up. Then I started seeing faces in the mist. Great job working a challenging scene!

With a white point at about 230, you might consider lightning it up and adding a little contrast for screen viewing? I used PS 'Find Dark & Light Colors' auto color correction option for the attached image. (add a curves layer and alt-click on the auto button to find a choice). This warmed it a bit but wasn't terrible. I like that you kept it to pastels.

96 Apr 26 Comment That's very nice, Kenneth. I love the rolling hills. With the silos silhouetted against a dramatic sky would make a really nice scene. Next trip is to the Palouse area of eastern Washington to catch some of those rolling grassland scenes from Steptoe Butte. Apr 3rd
96 Apr 26 Comment Simply lovely, like a painting or a story of the American west. Part of what makes the composition so great to me is only including part of the wheels. I think going wider and getting them all would lock my eye with detail instead of setting up the nice diagonal to the house. Apr 3rd
96 Apr 26 Comment If this was a song, it would have to be an ode of joy! How amazing that the glass was so perfectly aligned. On close examination I saw the lower reflections but still don't see any at top. Just a quick look at Mafra looked like a baroque fantasy in brick. Nicely done, Rick. Black and white really makes it. 96 Apr 26 Comment Love it, Pinaki! Majestic and mysterious... simple and almost architectural is its strength. I think there is a slight bit of foreground in the lower right but it's hard to tell perspective? I thought a drone at first. Are you at a cliffs edge?
I've been debating foreground use lately in terms of landscapes. Sometimes nice to frame or lead the eye but sometimes grand vistas speak for themselves?
