I like the image, but I think a tighter crop may improve it. The right and bottom of the picture don't really add anything for me and fight the eye for focus on the bee. |

Great portrait and well executed. I am sure the subject was pleased with the result. |

I love a good turtle shot. I can almost feel it trying to capture the last bit of warmth from the sun before the winter. |

wonderful capture with great focus throughout. I wish the rightmost pedal wasn't cut off though. |

I like this, and think the edits make a much stronger image. I bet it would make a fantastic B&W print as well. |

Thanks Butch, that's very kind and I appreciate the thoughtful feedback. When I was culling my pictures and saw the pose I thought it might be worth the time to see what I could do with it. Its always hard to take an image edited for printing and project it on a screen so you will have to take my word on the background working with the bird in the print. Its actually what one of the judges commented on as a reason he thought bumped it up to a perfect score. I think the lighter background helps separate out the black head and back of the bird. As you can see in the original image I did tone down the main branch quite a bit to be tonally equal to the other behind the birds head. I'm curious to hear other opinions on this and I'll have to go back and play with the image some more... |

Poor thing is going to bump his head. I agree it has impact if for no other reason than its not the typical shot you expect. One thing that bothers me a bit is the masking artifacts on right wing. There is some halos around the feathers and between them the sky is much lighter. It really pulls my eye right to that spot. I love the idea though... It makes me want to lie on my back under my birdfeeders and see what kind of unique angles I could get :) |

I think I would have added a fish in its talons ;) Seriously though, an excellent image that would look stunning as a large print. I love the warm glow of the colors and the water drops and wing tips just grab my eye and lead me right back to the face of the bird. Fantastic! |

These tits are just cuteness overload. The backlighting, perch and background are perfection. In the upper left there is maybe a dust spot that I would clone out, but other than that, I love it. I can go either way with the crop, but Butch's crop helps it follow the rule of thirds. I don't know if I like it flipped though, I actually prefer birds facing the left, not right in photographs. Maybe my brain is wired wrong :) |

This cuckoo is a lot different than the caterpillar eating birds we call Cuckoo's in the north-eastern US! This is a beautiful image both of the subject and background. You did a great job handling the contrast between the parts of the bird in sun and shadow. I like the horizontal crop to give the bird something to look into, but I may have gone a little tighter. |

I think this image has a strong emotional impact, especially with the author statement giving the background. The parent seems to have some motion blur that does hurt the image technically, and I wonder if a tighter crop might be more impactful? |
