Ken,
I love the soft light that you shot the image. The original was very even lit, but the B/W version is not as smooth and even texture? Did you try shooting B/W and using the built in filters that you have in the D810. How did you convert this into B/W? |

Kathryn. Do not apologize for your iPhone. Everything is sharp as a tack. A digital camera would not have made any better quality image at this range. I would have shot this in RAW with an app called Blackie. This app has built in filters like
red, green yellow and others. Also like the shape in the top left corner as I look at the image. The original 2 does not have that.
In other words you could shoot it in B/W and not have to play around with changing the image into B/W

Vincent, I really like the Original 2 version with the clouds.
I keep wondering how you got the Original 2 version. Came and shot on a different day or did you just wait for the light to change.
Old churches and buildings are good subjects in B/W. Especially when you have a range of different tones. Have you ever tried shooting in RAW color?
Many DSLR cameras have built in filters. Check your out. |

Great tonality (Black, Grey and White). This is what makes a super good B/W image. I love the title and the Man standing with one hand on the broken fence. The women seem to know what they were doing and do not need his help.
A very interesting shadow on the bottom right corner of the image. It could be more people watching the event. Jerry

Very nice Fran. Her eyes make this photo for me. Outstanding.
You could think about cropping just at the edge of the post?
I probably would consider just a tad lighter on the shadow side of the face.
Everything works on your image. She has a very strong and pleasant look. |

Dave, I have seen these Ice Pancakes off the coast of Lake Michigan in Dour County. They do not appear every year. So glad you caught this image. Your final tonality works. You have blacks, grey and whites which is need for a good B/W image. If your in a camera club where you live , get Don Toothacker to do a Zoom program for your group. He works in the Boston area and you can reach him via his website. He tells how he shoots B/W with his Nikon and uses the built in filters. Like Red, Yellow, Green etc. Just like we did in the old film days.
Your burning and dodging really makes this image standout. |

I have Procreate and never learned how to use it. Your final image is really a neat rendering. Love the creative background. Jerry |

That is really close Pam. I also like the patterns on the hood of your car. You also got the ocean nice and level. This is really an image for the books.
How long was he on your hood? Did you talk to it? Did it just stand there for you to photograph. You nailed it. Jerry |

I am very pleased with the quality that you got by doing a digital Zoom. I know that was your only choice with the cell phones limitation. Sometimes we have to just bite the bullet and do it. The only other choice was to shoot it with your longest lens and then crop the image to bring things closer. |

Dick, I really like both images. You must of had a very interesting location to shoot from? Looks very dangerous?
Just a suggestion. Snapseed works for a B/W conversion. I like Dramatic B/W for converting. It really gives that contrast punch the B/W needs. Cheap
App and easy to use. Jerry |

Thanks for the comment we all need to remember. At any location we need to be aware of changing light. Give it some time and it may get better.
I love how you are embracing the winter locations.
