Nicely done Don. Very strong image.
The only idea that I have as a suggestion is to darken all around the outside of the rose a little. Especially the bottom left corner. I did this with an Oak Leaf and over the past 30 years it is still my favorite B/W image. With the wide angle lens the backgrounds can be just as strong as the center of interest when it is so close. |

Great image Vincent. You nailed this scene without showing the face of the man. I like that fact. He still has his private space in a public setting. I do see that he has his hat out for a donation.
Wonderful tonality and capture. Bravo! I would not change anything. |

Wonderful image Paul. Wish it was mine. Love old steam engines.
I agree with Vincent that the ladder seems to distract from the very strong impact of the steam. It takes away from the story of steam.
This image could be best of show in any competition. |

Thanks David, Paul and Vincent. I struggled with this one but have not gotten the result that I wanted. My goal was to show the mess and the color really show much better. Jerry |

The haze creates an effect like fog (which I love because it simplify's a scene). Your image has a minimal effect that is very nice. I like it!
There are so many time that this is the effect that I want and can not achieve. Just seeing that long tall structure that almost seems impossible to withstand the intense winds and weather conditions is amazing to me. Riding to the top in elevators must be an interesting thought. We just had a sky skyscraper in Chicago where the cable broke with people in transit! Scary. Thanks for showing this unique image. |

I agree with you David. I end up with B/W images that I think should surpass the color images but they just sit there and give me a lifeless look. What I try to do is first up the color contrast almost to a garish strange look. Then I convert and see what the result in B/W does for me.
Many times I now see something that works to my taste. B/W conversions seem to need stronger color separations for impact when there is a complex range of tonality in the image. The background is totally different from the strong foreground and yet very important. This image needs special treatment. (Lots of playing around with a range of techniques. I have not worked with Luminosity Masks but I do use Radial netural density filters in ACR and get some results. Jerry |

I like both images but especially your creative result. The more we play, the more we discover neat little unique effects that we can develop. I keep telling my self, Jerry, you do not have to have images that look just like what everyone else does!
Snapseed has so many options and also Distressed FX when adding textures and tonalities. All of these presets can be altered to fix out taste.
Your image encouraged me to keep playing more with some of my images. |

Bob, very nice shot and a great idea of recording plants and nature around your cabin.
Here is what I suggest. Go into the tutorials and see how they treat an image where they want only part of the image to be treated. Example a color image where they want only part of the image to be B/W. In photo shop they call this layer masking. Outside the the main flower darken the entire image (or blur the entire image). Then to back and see that little curved arrow on the top right hand corner and click on it. Then click on view edits. Go to that layer (history like) and click on it. You will get a paint brush option. Just paint on the areas where you want to be changed. You may have to pinch out and enlarge the image so the brush is smaller to get into small places. Give it a try? Problems, call me! Jerry |

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. It was one of those (I have to shoot moments).
About the signature. I really got this idea from George Lepp. He sells a print and does not want to have to sign on the matt because he may sell just the unmatted print. In today's digital world we put water marks just to keep everyone informed who made the image. I could have toned down the bright white of the signature. Jerry |

Dave, you really show this scene well. Been there and did not get the result that you got with the iPhone. Totally sharp in the right places and that background is so nice. This shows one of the true faces of Death Valley. Hope you were there in the winter time!
This truly is an outstanding image with the cell phone. Great job Dave.
