I did the same in this image by selecting the center with the oval tool set to a feather of 180 pixels, iverting the selection, and increasing the density at the edges by 25%. |

"I thought this image of sunflowers backlit by the sun worked really well!" Darned if you weren't right, David!
Since the clouds are a little soft, you might have stopped down to f 16 or even 22 if it was available, but that's just a quibble. |

This image just cries out to be a black and white. With the exception of your son's hat it pretty much there. Once you have it B/W, you can play around with the contrast to find the exact tones that express your meaning. |

Owen, during my years in DC, I spent many hours at Great Falls and above and below them on the Potomac. One of our favorite activities was to rent a canoe at the municipal boathouse on the Georgetown Waterfront. That is the best way to sightsee DC.
This one is a great shot, but you might want to conside a little cropping from the right hand side and the bottom. That standing wave makes a great frame, but you might consider sacrificing it for increased impact. |

I totally agree with your suggestion for burning in the edges. But spoonbills are messy builders, so the sticks ARE the nest. As a matter of fact, I don't speak spoonbill, but the body language suggests that the female is giving her mate some useful, if unappreciated advice! |
