99 Nov 25 Comment This is a lovely portrait that powerfully conveys your intended feeling of being alone or lonely. I see the woman through a window with rain drops and some grain, which separates her from me as a viewer at the same time as it communicates loneliness. Very artistic. Her hands with long nails pressed against the window convey sadness, and the choice of converting to Black and White amplifies the melancholic mood. The woman is looking straight at us and that creates a direct connection despite the physical barrier of the window. Very nicely done. There are a few bright spots in the background that my eyes go to unwillingly - perhaps you can darken them and lighten the woman's face and hands somewhat to make sure that we are looking at her and nowhere else. Very nicely done. Nov 11th
99 Nov 25 Comment Robin, this is a lovely image of a calm and serene rural morning. Very well seen. Your patience in waiting for the dog walker paid off - that silhouette adds interest, human scale and story to the misty morning. The layered depth created by the mist is great, and your tonal control is strong. Perfect for monochrome. It is a beautiful image as it is, but like Peter, I also have a feeling that you have two lovely images here - one with the boat, the river and the tires, and one where the man and his dog on their morning walk is the main subject. I feel that the boat competes with the man and his dog in size and therefore is stealing the scene and the story. And the man and the dog are so nicely placed where most of the mist is and with that interesting fence at the bottom. Nov 11th
99 Nov 25 Comment This is a lovely street scene from bygone days with properly historical dressed persons with both charm and expressive faces - especially the policeman. He looks somewhat surprised with his eyes wide open, which adds a wonderful sense of humor to the image. I wonder what those three are talking about - certainly something interesting. There are many stories there to think of. Monochrome is absolutely the right choice. It strengthens the time profile, and you have a good tonal range there for it. Great picture. Nov 11th
99 Nov 25 Comment Barbara, I love your photo and the story you tell us about how the horse looked at you and smiled - and now it is smiling to me as a viewer. I feel a strong and positive connection. Wonderful! I think your instinct to keep the shadow adds compositional strength and graphic interest. Also, I feel that your choice to convert to Black and White was the right thing to do as it enhances a classic and timeless feeling for the race. Moreover, I think that you made the right choice to darken the background - but somehow my eyes still wander there. Maybe a slight vignette or some blur in the background would keep my eyes even better focused on the lovely horse and its shadow. Nov 11th
99 Nov 25 Comment You have managed to capture a documentary moment in a travel photography from an interesting place in France. And with that, you are telling us a touching human story about the exhausted elderly American, potentially connected to WWII history, that are doing his utmost to come to see and likely remember what took place in this part of the world so far from his own. The weathered stone backdrop reinforces your theme of history and endurance. I appreciate also that you are using contrasts to add interest and depth - the exhausted elderly tourist with the young working crewman. Very well done. Nov 11th
99 Nov 25 Comment Peter and Barbara, Thank you so much for your comments. The more I look at my own image, the more problems I see with it. The sunburst, for example, does not look real and moreover, it competes with my cowboy as the subject. Do you think the new photo below is better? Right now I think none of them are particularly good, but it was anyway a fun experience and memory. Nov 11th
