The glow is actually a small town just south of me, but I like the effect it gives. Timing in between cars and trucks on the highway on my right was the biggest challenge. I probably spent two hours out there once the milky way came up. And it was a little stinky down by the water of Mono Lake. Haha. The things we endure for a shot. I also learned how to use the app, PhotoPills, so lots of good education for future attempts. |

Thank you, Butch, for the kind comments. I bought the R5 as a second camera when I went to South Africa last year. I honestly haven't given it my full attention because I really like my R3. I bought the R3 when I was down with Covid in 2021. I work in healthcare. It gave me something to learn while I isolated at home for a couple weeks. But one-handing the heavier R3 with a 70-200 last month while on horseback makes me wish I had spent more time with the R5 to feel confident.
For shooting the MW, I watched a few tutorials recommended to our group. Most seemed to recommend starting with 20-30 sec exposures, f2.8. I was also battling traffic on Hwy 395 that actually runs along my shot on the right. Waiting in between cars and trucks was challenging. This is one of my better captures. Some were out of focus or had more blur. I agree, this is better than I expected. I also adjusted white balance down to 3700 for some shots, auto ISO for others. Do you adjust your WB? I should have compared the R3 and R5, but I only used the R3 for these. |

Having just been to South Africa last year, I enjoyed opening up this image. Great number of animals collected under an iconic tree. I agree with Barbara that there is a visible bubble around the tree of lighter sky, at least on my screen it is visible. Though I appreciate the detail in the wildebeests, bringing out the shadow may have sacrificed the feeling of shade that your are trying to emphasize. Maybe dial up the blacks just a bit. But overall, the image calls my heart back to Africa... |

Welcome back! I like what Butch has done to open up the shadows. I also like what Barbara mentioned, to crop a bit from the left. I like the line from the trees by the house to the midground tree and then to the smaller one just above the end of the fence. |

I agree with many of the above comments. The classic image has so much to explore and appreciate. What a wonderful memory. I agree with flipping the image so that the pillars are on the bottom. If you're going for abstract, how about creating an image with a reflection of the domes merged so that the pillars are in the middle? Not true to the building, but may be interesting... |

Great eye to see this opportunity. I love the detail in the leaves and as Tom said, the choice to use IR makes it interesting as opposed to green leaves. If I hadn't read the description, I'm not sure I would understand it's a gap of fencing. I considered saying to narrow the gap by removing the right half of the gap to make it less distracting. But this might also take away too much from the story. |

I enjoy this image as I have the same bush in my backyard that is often visited by hummingbirds. I have not attempted the set up it would take to get a shot like this, well done. You can even see the long tongue of the bird, aren't they amazing? The separation of subject from background is great. From other's comments, the challenge is to try again with greater depth of field and try the flashes.
I also have the 100-400. I often wonder if the 200-800 would be worth trying, or invest in a better 150-600 or good 600. Perhaps try renting one if available? |

I like the pop of the orange color of the truck and the character of the logs. Certainly tells a story. I agree with cropping the amount of sky/clouds. The cloud cover gives that nice diffuse lighting and allows the truck to be the main feature for me. |
