Kamal- I truly enjoyed your image. It allows us to enjoy a great view of a truly magnificent site . I like the technical corrections suggested by Emil and Chris as well as their crop and resulting composition which allows the viewer to fully appreciate the grandeur of the temple.
Cheers

Chris - well done. Well captured and processed to show the fine details in the flower and the snow. A great reminder that nature always gives us an infinite number of subjects to photograph anytime and anywhere.

Adrian - a very enjoyable image and background story to the making of the image. In a sense I think I understand your concept of including many elements ( boat, dock, ducks, fisherman, piers ) as this is an image of a fisherman in a busy industrialized lake and not a pristine mountain lake. But I do like Emil's treatment.

Mark - great interpretation of what you saw in an instant. The original color image shows 3 aspects : the outside street scene and buildings, reflections of what is behind you and the frame of (a window?) that you are looking through. The reflections are clearly evident in the original and more difficult to retain in the B&W conversion.
I have converted to DXO Photolab 9 and I used your image to practice - I tried to retain details of the 3 dimensions from the original.

Emil - I love the tranquil mood expressed in the original and emphasized through the B&W treatment.
I am now in the process of converting to DXO photolab 9 so I used your original to practice with. Still not quite mastered but I wanted to draw the eye away a little bit from the light in the middle by showing more of the cobblestones so that the eye starts at the cobblestones as a leading line/foreground and then rests on the rest of the street.

Pete - Great topic and great image. For years I would frequent a bar because the owner had been the Oyster Shucking Champion of Canada.
I recently made the Fujiflim XT5 as my main camera and now have adopted DXO Photolab 9 as the Raw editor as it performs well with the Fujifilm sensor. I am still on the learning curve and I used your image to practice - results not guaranteed yet.
Cheers

Adrian - thank you for your comprehensive comments. When I took the picture the thought that went through my mind is that clearly these two people were a couple even though they were quite apart from each other. And seeing their age they have been together for a long time!
I could have used a title such as " Walking on the Beach " but I wanted to convey more. And it appears that the relative distance between the two figures does change the interpretation that viewers make. In your case you thought they are having a disagreement because they are quite far apart ( but we feel that they will get over their disagreement ) . Another interpretation could be that they are late for "happy hour" and he is running ahead to get a table , another is that she is worried about him and is keeping an eye on him. Closer together such as in Emil's version conveys a close relationship.

Emil - thank you for the suggestion - I think your approach is straightforward and yields better , cleaner results. And it can be used to reposition the two characters at will to achieve different compositions.

I like to provide more details about the post processing. In terms of composition I wanted to have the two subjects closer together and I wanted to provide a bit more negative space in front of the man for him to move into. I used content aware scale but I think there are some artifacts left especially in the waves in the middle of the image which I need to fix in future attempts.
Would welcome your comments also on flipping the image : the original seems to have more emphasis on the woman and the B&W version more emphasis on the man and the message seems different. Any preference? |
