Chris - I was drawn into the image by the small mushroom that somehow managed to thrive in a small hole in a decayed log. I go for long walks in conservation areas and, as you, find amazing subjects ( plants and animals ) to photograph in decaying logs/roots. I particularly like to focus close as the smallest subjects are the most interesting. With this bias in mind I cropped your image to satisfy more my interest - as your image is excellent as is. |

Mark - Loved the effect you captured and then enhanced with your processing. What subjects do you generally find that you can attribute humanlike qualities? |

Adrian - Excellent advice on cultivating patience - have an Aperol Spritz at hand! Your B&W treatment is outstanding and indeed reminiscent of iconic photographers.
I am beginning to recognize your preference for a square crop - and I have as a project to do more square cropping in my images. My first reaction in viewing the image is that the woman's shadow has a key impact on the image ( that's where my eyes go first) . The first thought was where has the woman been? To get back to cropping - certainly cropping is a key aspect of composition . I attempted a portrait crop and the message seems to become where is the woman going. I also tried to clone out the fence on the top left hand corner to make the image more minimalist but then this would detract from a realism perspective. Well done |

Emil - as per Ansel Adams you "made the picture " with your effective post processing techniques. It is remarkable the amount of distractions you were able to eliminate and the focus you were able to bring to Ed's face and hands .
I became curious about what Ed is doing in the B&W image - I did a square crop to focus more on Ed and lightened the tool that he is using to reflect the title - Ed in his workshop |

I am a Canadian and I never heard of the sport - thanks for introducing it to me. With global warming it may be the only way to be able to use snowmobiles!
The B&W treatment is right on - by darkening the background you have turned a vacation snapshot into a documentary on an esoteric action sport . |

Pete - the image conveys very well the plight faced by animals in captivity ( but that is becoming the only way we can prevent wild animals from becoming extinct )- you can see it encapsulated in the expression in one sad eyes.
The B&W treatment is effective. And I also like the original image as I find the yellowish color in the pupil actually draws the attention to the eye more than the B&W. |
