NOW, I see the background is not another cloudy sky, but El Capitan. |

The salt flats are never (in recent centuries) under water. The are the remnants of Lake Bonneville. The Great Salt Lake is in the low part of this area and adjacent to the Flats, and closer to SL City. IT does have great sunsets and reflections. Good idea on the mountains. thanks |

I think it does what you desired to do, but if there is to be a story in the photo, I can't find it. |

Your comment invites me to open it in a photo editor, which I did and that gave me a better view. I think to increase Contrast (in Contrast/Brightness) to 50 makes it look stronger. It also appears that you did a selection around the top ends of the tree branches and then inserted a new sky with clouds, because it appears obvious that you have two skies in this image. Since the tree is the subject, you may not need a sky with clouds? What does it look like with only one (the original one and the one behind the tree limbs) sky? I suspect it would be an improvement.
Several nice (some implied) lines and a foreground item (the rock) help the image.

This is a lead on an article in the WA Post.....Of interest vis a vis the photo:
Great Salt Lake on track to disappear in five years, scientists warn
Unsustainable water use is pushing the lake toward collapse, researchers say, imperiling ecosystems and exposing millions of people to toxic dust from the dry lakebed. |

Based on the shadow on the floor and other things, the light seems to be from over the back of his own right shoulder which one would expect to create some bad shadows on his face. You avoided or corrected that nicely. |

Strange how orchids have a texture on the petals. Makes it look like computer "noise" when it really is natural. A caution for everyone based on my experience is that if you get judges who are not familiar Botanists, they'll trash your image every time. However, the orchids are good when it comes to selling them.
Never plant them in, or put dirt in their pot. They only bloom when they get root bound, so it takes patience. But they're worth it.
Nice photograph.

Thanks. I took this photo around 2003 and never did anything with it or about it. What I've learned in this DD32 encouraged me to take another look in the slides archive and see what I've been missing and what I could do.
Thanks to all.

The ripples are in the 2-5" range, but most on the smaller end of that. Utah and much of the Mountain West are unknown/unseen by almost everybody. travel and tourism is directed almost to the point of being controlled by the Travel Industry and the various Chambers of Commerce/Visitors Bureaus. (There aren't any of these in the salt flats.) They can be dangerous for travel when wet and soft. You mention the light: Early morning is great....before breakfast or even coffee. Evenings are ok, but a person can get caught up in the worship of the sunset. |
