I agree.
Over the years I've taken (or tried to take) photos of Engineers waving and such, but as someone said earlier, they're usually hidden away in the cab.
The NPS site has a real vintage repair shop and "garage" to keep all the relics in top shape. As Jennifer said, "It's a neat place" |

I like the color version better, too.
Just attempting to see if it has appeal in mono.
thanks to all.

I found these two images in the Feb 2023 (Issue 153) of the Black & White Magazine and thought of your hardware store images.

Interesting. It does look like the teeth of something. I wish the second set of teeth, in the upper middle, had been in a sharper focus. Nice conversion to BW and composition. |

White subjects are so difficult to photograph because of the propensity to "blow out" the detail. I believe the whites in this photo are nicely done. Where you could concentrate, albeit difficult with a telephoto lens, is the depth of field which in this case rendered the stamens to be out of focus, as Stephen has already pointed out. The composition (inclusion of leaves) seems to work ok. |

I'm happy to see that the NPS was involved in this historic celebration to give it the credibility it deserves, by providing two Locomotives and staff. |

Exactly. The two railroads couldn't have been built had they not had laborers (and skilled ones) from China and Ireland.
BTW: My great grandfather may have been in the BW photo. He had a small enterprise that supplied some of the RR Ties (logs) to the railroads. He lived just a short distance from the Promontory Summit in Richmond, Cache County.
thanks for the historical item about the Chinese. |

I think the mono is superior to the color. So much more is apparent. All of the repetitive shapes (rectangles and squares and trapezoids) of the houses are impressive. Contrast looks nice as does the sharpness and composition. The church stands out as the prominent building.....and the primary subject.

It is an interesting repetitive set of "patterns" and well carried out. How and where (in what competition categories) would you place this? |

It appears that the original capture was taken on a diagonal..... and nothing that is vertical appears to be vertical. I'm wondering if the "Spike" is vertical or not. Technically, very well done. I'm disturbed by the angle, however.

Very creative. Like the "bordering"; odd is good: three main items; the pen pointing to the postcard keeps the eyes moving in the right direction. The black background works well.
Have you (all) noticed in your daily routines how few letters and cards are written? Today, at least at our house, the mail person just delivers ads, junkmail, and a few bills. It has become a "lost art." |
