Thanks to all. It was a tricky lighting situation and I appreciate all the nice comments. (Darker, More texture, cropping off the left, etc.) Here's my interpretation of them. Using an old Nik Silver Efex: StreetGritty preset plus in Structure, I increased Structure and increased Shadows slider in Structure. wes
PS: Now my original BW submittal looks washed out....Good suggestions. |

Thanks. It was in 2007 or so that we went. Sorry bout that.
More texture: good idea, but how do you do that?
thanks

Cropping is important since it can't always be done in camera, and we're not shooting 35mm slides anymore. Recognizing a potentially good image, as you've done is as important to the successful final image as all the interim foofaw. (ie, the latter can't overcome a poor subject.) Diane's crop is a definite improvement and her structure adjustment to bring out the detail in the white helps to make it a very nice photograph. It ought to do well, particularly in a portfolio of old local buildings.
Welcome to Group 32 where a few of us have participated for many years; and to good advantage. |

Very nice. I've never seen the "rainbow" before, but I like the B&W version better.

This photo is one I resurrected from my slides archive. Taken on a five day four-wheel vehicle trip on the White Rim Trail that is in the Canyonlands below the Island in the Sky/DeadHorse Point rim. It was with the Wasatch Camera Club in Utah which did many multi-day trips like this. We were sleeping in the open in sleeping bags at one of the designated places with rough toilets and some water. Reservations are needed via the NPS at Canyonlands (near Arches NP and Moab, Utah). We awoke to see this sunrise in the making before making coffee to enjoy the view. Needed a tripod and film in the camera, of course. It is 13 x22 and will frame at 10x20 |

Good comments.
Seems like Antelope Canyon is all that anyone who is a tourist sees. Buckskin Gulch is on Federal property, un-fenced and open to whoever can find it and show up. Those are the things one finds on their 3rd or 5th trip to the Canyonlands. It's a magic place, not the least because you will be alone or almost alone. Eerie, indeed. No Guides. No spots to plant the tripods. No best time to get there, etc. Like a first discovery trip. People who love the desert relish places like this: serene, alone, adventurous, find your favorite spot, etc. You can see and photograph the place and come back feeling like you have lived to tell the tale.

a surprising flip and many acceptable renditions. White is so difficult to photograph and retain the details (especially when printing.) If I were a teacher, that would be one of the important exercises I would asssign. Nice work, all.

Interesting. Keep on shooting at the hardware store. It's new and novel. |

I think the only way to get the detail from the bottom of the bridge is as you've done so, as a High Key. I think straight dodging, would come through as fake. |

Well, the color version did not get sent (or included), but I like the mono image very much. Nice "everything." |

Stephen hits the mark on both comments.
My opinion: The sculpture artist puts his work up for others to enjoy, not to sell it. I believe photographing it and making some edits is perfectly ok, but I recognize that all will not agree.
