"to a PSA competition for that division" is incorrect. One must win a ribbon in an International Salon (approved Salon by PSA).
My 1st places (two of them) which were exhibited at San Antonio were in
1. the PPD End of Year Competition which is for ribbon winners during the year in Joe Hearst's Print of the Month, a PSA competition, was not qualified for the big contest: The PPD Print of the Year. I got that directly from Louis Duncan, Director of PPD. And, when he wrote that he confirmed that in addition it requires "an invitation."
2. The Green Eagle Contest which was an End of Year competition for Prints in PPD Study Groups. It didn't qualify for the PPD Print of the Month.
Confusing, I know. It took me several attempts to get a definitive straight answer. The PPD Print of the Year ought to be called the International Salon Winning Print of the Year. And, that is only a PSA approved competition most of which are run by others, not always an actual PSA Competition. |

Thanks Jennifer. What you describe applies to competitions such as the Print of the Month and Green Eagles and InterClub... But for PPD annual POM, one must have won a ribbon in an International Salon AND be invited (all according to the PPD (previous) Director Louis Duncan.) Net result: One's (1st place) end of year ribbons in the former do not qualify for the latter, only the International Salon ribbons. |

It wasn't "the Conference" it was the fact that with no Stars ..... and being my first Conference, I was simply ignored. I even tried unsuccessfully to volunteer in PPD, was totally embarrassed at Breakfast when my two 1sts and one 2nd were totally ignored while a 3rd from someone else was touted, and most of the time at the podium was in praising each other (all of, and only, the officers). Jon Fishback scheduled a meeting, saying he wouldn't be at the Conference but to go ahead without him, and nobody showed up except me. And then to learn that to win or even compete in the PPD Print of the Year, one "had to be invited to compete." Guess who got invited? I left after the Breakfast, two days early. It's not only a good ol' boys club, it's a SMALL club and too difficult to break into. I tried.
I've learned that the "new emphasis" will be to attract younger people as members and to "emphasize education." I've also heard that PSA can attract young people but can retain them. Do you see a connection with my experience? And the plan as described to me re education does not include Fishback. Go Figure.
Is it possible to be involved in the GSCCC while not being a member of PSA? And not be a member of a club that isn't a member of GSCCC? When we (our club) were members, I attended two (or maybe three) Conferences, enjoyed them and learned a lot. |

It'd never occured to me about reflections being darker, but I see what you mean. Thanks for that. |

Thanks.
A lot of the increase in texture is due to NIK Silver Efex. |

The detail is fine.
The veg in the background is a strong competitor for interest over the old tree trunk. I don't know how one could lighten/brighten the tree trunk to make it stand out better, but maybe someone who agrees might know. |

This month will be my last for participation in the Study Group. I've enjoyed our friendships and the interchange of information. It has been very helpful to me and my photographic activities. So, I bid you all farewell and best wishes. (I've decided not to re-new my PSA membership which comes due at the end of November. I had some unfortunate experiences last year at the San Antonio International PSA Conference (my first Conference) and came away from it with the feeling that at my age I am too old to have enough years left to crack the tight "good old boy network" that exists. After a subsequent year, I am convinced.)

Re cliques, yes, and it's even worse in our Ph Club, so I'm bailing out of it at end of year. I'll continue as Curator of two galleries and a member of another two club which are really just art galleries.
PS: Did you know that in the PSA Pictorial Print Division the Print of the Year Contest entry "is by invitation only." |

For the fun of it, you might enjoy seeing what I did when I converted this to monochrome. It is in DD 32 this month in tandem with this color version. Note their comments. I showed this color version as a "before" for them. I used the Nik Silver Efex Pro II to do the conversion. You-all may have figured out that I am more favorably inclined to mono vs color. wes |

A Suggestion: Try taking several shots across the entire scene and then stitching them in Elements or Photoshop. I've done that when standing too close to a building, and the bonus is not getting the wide angle distortion after the stitching is done.
As it is, it is very well done, sharp, lights have nice rays around them, well balanced cropping. I'll bet the church people were pleased. |
