Thank you Dawn for your insightful comment. I agree that the foreground doesn't seem to perform as a solid guiding line. To address the imbalance issue, there should be more ways to approach it. Let me keep trying different options. |

Hi Paul, nice to meet you all here.
This is an old pier that was built in or before 1963 for transportation. It will be rebuilt in the near future. Yes, the most eye-catching part is upper 2/3. It was a challenge to handle the lower 1/3 and the pier. |

Hi Darcy, thank you for your valuable suggestions. Yea, I was using tripod.
When I was taking this photo, I encountered two main challenges:
First: The composition was heavily unbalanced towards the left, and there were no suitable shooting locations available. (The silhouette of the distant mountain and the pier in the foreground were both skewed to the left.)
Second: The scene lacked other leading lines, with no large rocks by the seaside or boats present.
To address the critical issue of composition balance, I made the following adjustments:
1. Extended the old pier from the left to the right (beyond the center of the frame), but left some empty space on the far right to provide breathing space.
2. Included the waves and enhanced reflection of the Sun in the lower right corner to add visual weight on the right side.
3. Added more breathing space within the frame, allowing the viewer's gaze to move freely from left to right.
To solve the leading lines issue:
1. Included the beach and small white pebbles at the bottom of the frame, creating a visual path that guides the eye between the pebbles, the pier, and the sunset.
I will try a 10mm full-frame lens next time, as it would allow me to capture more of the sky and provide additional breathing space. |
