Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
19 Jul 19 Comment Great shot, and with a tremendous sense of the soaring towers due to the perspective.
AMEN to Stan's remarks that this perspective is what we also see with our eyes. It is not distortion, although our brains tend to remove vertical perspective. I will point out that vertical perspective behaves the same as horizontal perspective, and we don't mind that the parallel lines of a vanishing street converge. Same concept applies to vertical perspective.
If parallel lines tend to bow in or out, this is barrel or pincushion distortion--a lens flaw that can be removed in PS.

23 Jul 19 Comment So you photographed the green image and your creative element was to re-interpret the colors? Nicely done, and I think quite creative. Please tell us where you found the original subject and how big it was, and in what medium.
By now, you have no doubt googled "Marc Chagall," the artist, and seen how your original artist was inspired by Chagall's work.

25 Jul 19 Comment Nice shot of a young Balinese dancer. Did you get to see a performance? Did you see a shadow puppet theater performance? I believe that the human dances imitate the movements of the puppets. Jul 24th

29 Jul 19 Comment Being homeless--anywhere--can hardly be an easy or safe lifestyle. But for the fact that I know my friend in Hawaii owns his own comfortable home, this might be him. I urge you to make social commentary about homeless people's condition when you see the chance. Jul 24th

31 Jul 19 Reply Very impressive in B/W. I really learned something about "shape and form and tone and texture which an aurora has in plenty."
Sky trail? Is that a shooting star to the left of the mountain? Wow! Why not leave it in for the b/w? Posted: 07/24/2019 09:15:52

32 Jul 19 Comment I agree with both Diana and Gloria.
I would try shooting this with a wide-angle lens on the beach about 20 feet before the bow, to include the low tide and wood pilings. I prefer the drama of the wide-angle shot.
As to the title, I have long advocated careful title selection to help tell the story. I actually do not think that am image should entirely stand on its own, but that the title strengthens the understanding of the image.

32 Jul 19 Reply Thank you, Larry. Those are great suggestions for my planning for the next photoshoot like this. Jul 22nd
32 Jul 19 Comment Yes, Tom, you are quite right about the image lacking room around the subjects. That was the full frame image that I got. Jul 15th
32 Jul 19 Comment I agree with the comments about the position of the horse. You caught a great moment. The position of the rider is also very good. Her feet are firm in the stirrups and her eyes are straight ahead 30 ft where the horse is heading. So you have captured a rider in good control. Jul 7th
32 Jul 19 Comment I totally agree with Diana. This is so much more interesting a shot in monochrome. It's truly amazing how that works sometimes. Jul 7th
32 Jul 19 Comment This is a very successful shot of the school children. The only thing I can suggest is to consider cropping to show just the three girls, compositionally. On the other hand the Renegade expression of the little boy makes a nice contrast with the girls. Jul 7th
32 Jul 19 Comment Yes, these local girls are on the raised wall area. It's about 10 or 15 meters across. A truly wonderful public park. Jul 7th
32 Jul 19 Comment Looks great to me. I love it when animal shots like this show every hair of the fur. It makes me feel like I'm right in the presence of the creature. Glad to hear Brian is getting out and around with you as normal. Jul 5th

39 Jul 19 Comment This is a fine shot of a busy shopping Street with everyone acting naturally. I would prefer the man in front to be in Focus, but at F5 you don't get everything in. Maybe at F11 he would have been sharp as well. Jul 23rd
39 Jul 19 Comment I absolutely love empty architectural shots. This is such a great capture. Amen to your colleague's praises of your storytelling. Jul 23rd

40 Jul 19 Comment This is a fine, sensitive shot. Your portrait class is working! Also try having Jack turn to face you for side lighting showing a triangle of light under his eye on the shadow side. Google "Rembrandt Triangle." Jul 23rd
40 Jul 19 Comment I very much like that you have not made this a formal still life. I find setting the flowers in place on the Lakeshore table very Charming. If you choose to work on this as a formal still life separately that's fine but I really like this shot as it is. Jul 23rd
40 Jul 19 Comment This is a fine shot and a great capture from a boat moving along the river. I am most interested in the wonderful discussion between you and your group colleagues. One of the best things about our digital dialogue groups is discussions like this. Thank you. And thank you to all your group colleagues. Jul 22nd

44 Jul 19 Comment Great discussion you all are having about keeping images authentic. I really don't care for overly post-process shots that have a lot of punch but very little reality. Bravo for sticking up for reality. Jul 20th
44 Jul 19 Comment Hi, I am visiting from monochrome group 32. You have a great shot here and of course the colors are one of the strongest features. Nevertheless, I suggest you try it out in monochrome with a touch of sharpening and contrast if necessary because you have such great Textures in this shot. Jul 20th

45 Jul 19 Comment I just want to comment that this image has tremendous staying power for me. I just want to keep looking at it and looking at it and looking at it. Good shot. Good crop. Good concept. Congratulations. Jul 20th

48 Jul 19 Comment Very rich colors and textures. I don't have editing capabilities while I'm on travel to try anything, but of course you can check out how this looks in monochrome. It is surprising how many colorful floral pictures also look good in monochrome. Check out how it works if you flip it up side down. Jul 8th

49 Jul 19 Comment I mean perspective. Jul 19th
49 Jul 19 Comment It's wonderful to get shots like this when you travel to far away places. Placing the camera on the floor is a great idea for Dome shooting. For historical comparison here is Giovanni Panini's 1734 painting of the interior. Notice that he did more with prospective than any of us can with our cameras. Jul 19th

50 Jul 19 Comment Lovely shot. If you take the option to crop from the bottom, consider making the Stone pavement line end precisely in the right lower corner. I rather like composing curves like that, but it's a matter of each person's taste. Jul 18th

59 Jul 19 Comment Lots of potential here with a great action shot. Remove the 4th skater half-hidden, and definitely don't use reflections but get close in to the three skaters. For PJ of course you must leave the 4th skater. Jul 17th

61 Jul 19 Comment You have one great model there. Tremendous pose and fantastic toe points. You did very well to only need 6 tries. Me, I would prefer not to see the wristwatch, but it's consistent with her sports outfit. Jul 17th

64 Jul 19 Comment A stunning image. Both color and monochrome make me feel like I've been there. About the Symmetry question, some of our colleagues in other groups have dealt with this by taking half the image, flipping it and combining it with the original. Jul 17th

67 Jul 19 Comment Hello Larry. Wonderful shot. And truly wonderful storytelling. I look forward every month to visiting your group and seeing your pictures and hearing your stories about taking them. I especially liked your discussion about the neutral density filter and exposure management. I made an uphill hike to Tuckerman Ravine on Mount Washington a very long time ago of about the same distance and gradient as the hike you just took. So you're hiking story brought back my old memories of my experience. Jul 17th

75 Jul 19 Comment Great job being in the right place and seeing the shot. This is a fine image, as all your group mates have said. You might just consider removing the faint poles on the left side. Jul 16th

76 Jul 19 Comment In addition to the excellent Unity of color that you've achieved, I also like the rhythmic arrangement of rectangles from left to right: Square, rectangle, Square, rectangle. Jul 15th
76 Jul 19 Comment I think both images are great, and the project concept very promising. For some history, Google "small trades Irving Penn." He had a different style for a similar project. Jul 15th
76 Jul 19 Comment Sanford had a good suggestion for you about including some people around the campfire. Everyone agrees you made a good shot of capturing the flames. If you try to shoot both flames and people around the campfire, then you have a complicated exposure situation. If your camera is capable of shooting one exposure for the flames and then ending with a flash for the people, you might be able to capture both. Jul 15th

78 Jul 19 Comment Why has no one mentioned that 221B Baker Street is the fictional home of Sherlock Holmes? Jul 14th

79 Jul 19 Comment One of the best things about our digital dialogues is the sharing of stories with each other. Stories about how the photographs were taken. Stories about the journeys to get to the photographic sites. And personal heartfelt stories like yours. Thank you for telling your story. Jul 14th

80 Jul 19 Comment I think Lanning's compositional comment makes a good point in general. However your shot expresses the child's feelings with the arch of his back and the thrust of his arms. Jul 13th
80 Jul 19 Comment Yes a perfect story shot. So many of the Havana shots are simply of quaint character faces. But this tells quite a bit about the life of the people. Jul 8th

81 Jul 19 Reply Hi Hema,
I wrote a huge list of monthly theme ideas a while back and sent it to my local club's monthly theme committee. They usually use one or two of my ideas a year. If you would like a copy, I can email it to you. If you don't want to show your email address publicly here, then you can write to the DD Director, Barbara Miller, and ask her to forward it to me.

81 Jul 19 Comment What a creative shot! It particularly resonates with me because I make lists of monthly themes for my local Club. One theme, although never used, was unusual uses of the camera. Your Excellent shot fulfills my unfulfilled theme. Jul 11th

82 Jul 19 Comment I'm sure it is a matter of taste and intention, but I would prefer it if the Rocks ended in the exact lower left corner. Right now their end does extend to the lower left corner but only by using a triangle of sand. Jul 11th

83 Jul 19 Comment What a great idea to make a monochrome shot of something that is almost always shot in color. Impressive. Well done. Jul 10th
83 Jul 19 Comment This is a very attractive composition. Especially the excellent contrast. I'm glad you mentioned the problem of the garbage along the coast of your Island. You could consider a similar shot emphasizing the garbage in the foreground in order to make a social commentary. Jul 10th
83 Jul 19 Comment I think both images convey a very successful sense of the original scene. Nice shooting. In many monochrome competitions, the original would count as a monochrome. Jul 10th
