Carol's sample of adding the cat makes a nice addition, and her experience with competition is a good guide. I am not experienced at all with competition, but I also like the original because I am personally into EMPTINESS in images, suggesting either loneliness, estrangement, or even peacefulness and tranquility. |

What a good idea. Yes, I have one suitable architectural image from that location--that will be for next month. |

Really nicely done. I love the light sepia tone for this image. How about showing us the original, so we can see how far you took this? |

Please tell us a little more. Do you have technical info on the image? I am especially interested in the focal length of the lens and the distance you stood from your subject. Available light only? Was your subject speaking or singing? How many shots did you take in order to get this one? And just to add some background interest, what kind of event was this.
As to my comment about the image, I think you did very well to get in close on your subject's face. |

Do I like the color or mono better for competition? This is really interesting, as I continue to sort out in my mind the differences and appropriate use of color and mono. In this case I prefer the mono, because it is "distinctive." Just plain different from the original color scene. Also, the real world subject is just not about color--maybe it would be if you were shooting 4 or 5 of the Lancaster folks together in their colorful shirts.
I am surprised to find I don't care for the all-black background in this case--because that is almost a universal preference for me. The natural subject matter demands a natural background. |

I am OK with the sunflower in the engine--it looks fine to me. You might experiment with an extreme wide-angle shot with the sunflower in the foreground and a partial view of the tractor.
As to the greater goal of expressing "the decay and transition of family farms to corporate organizations," I don't think this one image captures all that, and it would be quite a challenge to express that in a single image--BUT I think you are on the right track for a show of 20-40 images that has that as a theme and this would be one image in that show. Some members of my local club stress a "body of work" concept--sometimes a photo-essay of four images can do that, sometimes it take more images. I have noticed a number of shows in museums and galleries and print/electronic media that have the "body of work" concept to express their idea. |

Good job with getting a fine model. I have commented once or twice about trying for models that express inner feelings. We don't know as precisely as words could express what this woman's thought are, but she certainly expresses some turmoil. Her hand pose is excellent, also, and supports her distressed facial expression.
Technically, I think the framing is great, and whoever chose the tree to lean against made a good choice, although a stone wall (her castle and simultaneously her prison) is another choice. Her left hand is way too bright on my monitor and lacks detail, and is almost pure white compared to the right hand. Again on my monitor, her face is a little too bright and I can't make out the brow wrinkles that must be there and would enhance her expression.
As to competition, good plan to test it out locally. The drama world is full of fine and expressive actors and images of them, so I don't think this rises to international competition.
A personal note--years ago, my wife had a good friend who was settled in Totness in Devon, and lived in a pre-Elizabeth house. The whole town had a weekly dress-up day, which we loved seeing when we visited. |
