32 Aug 23 Reply That's interesting that you prefer the image without the log on the right side. It isn't very photogenic, but I thought it was needed to help offset the "weight" of the image towards that side. Aug 28th
32 Aug 23 Reply Yes, I agree this could use more contrast, although I struggle with the completely "black" sky feeling unnatural to me. However, it is more dramatic. I need to replace my broken spyder calibration tool, as it seems the images almost always appear to have more contrast when I edit them than they do once they post here. There may be something better for calibration now. It seems I'm almost always behind with technology. Aug 28th
32 Aug 23 Comment Yes, I agree that including the three subjects at staggered heights works well here. I'd perhaps have preferred the person on the left to step forward just a bit to avoid the feeling of being somewhat behind the fence. However, that might have resulted in a merger problem with the similar dark tones of the hat and door, so perhaps it is better that you left it as you did. To me, the woman's face on the right and the upper part of the priest's head are a bit bright, but that may be my monitor. Aug 28th
32 Aug 23 Comment Birds are fascinating to watch, aren't they? It is most unfortunate that something happened to the mother here, though. Although your emphasis is on the eggs in this image, I, too think I'd prefer more depth of field, as there are lots of interesting textures in the nest. It can always be darkened down some if it competes too much with the subject. The twigs on the right look fine to me, put I think I'd consider darkening the ones on the upper left some more to eliminate the bright spot on the branches leading out of the image. I also like the shadows on the left egg. Aug 28th
32 Aug 23 Comment You did a nice job capturing the action of the splashing and the bull's apparent lack of enthusiasm about it. I also like how you brightened the bull in the monochrome image. As others mentioned, the bird on the horn is a great serendipitous moment. I agree with the suggestions to crop in tighter to better emphasize the action happening in the image and perhaps to lighten the guy's face a bit. Out of curiosity, how close were you to the subjects here? Bulls running toward you seems like it would be rather scary. Aug 28th
32 Aug 23 Comment It is fortunate you explained what was happening here, as I certainly wondered when I first saw this image. I, too, like Diana's suggestion to make it look more sinister. Red eyes might be taking it too far, but her version brings to mind the black and white photos with just one color added in a select place or places. Aug 28th
32 Aug 23 Comment I agree that your conversion to monochrome and sepia treatment on this image better convey to me the age of this building than the color version does. You've done a nice job controlling what likely was very bright light coming in through the window, although on my monitor the floor highlight is still just a little bit brighter than I think I'd prefer it to be. It's nice that you had light-colored barrels here, as most I've seen are usually darker wood. However, I think the lighter ones work nicely here. On a very non-photography related note, I've somehow missed that you are in Cape Girardeau. That is where my relatives on my father's side settled when they immigrated from Europe in the mid 1840s before my great-grandfather came to Texas in 1908. Aug 28th
32 Aug 23 Comment Although the monochrome image does help to minimize the distractions from the bright spots on the ground and color hue of the tent, I initially found it difficult to tell what I was seeing in the monochrome image. Initially, I thought the child's hair was some sort of embellishment on the mom's shoulder, until I looked closer and saw the child's arm and hand. (Yes, I am getting new glasses soon!) So like you and several of the others, my preference is for the color version. I also would have liked to see at least some of the child's face, although I realize that at events like this one, you often risk losing the candid moment if you move or ask the models to do so.
