This is a nice image, particularly since I almost always see this subject in the background of Mesa Arch photos, as you mentioned. Those are nice as well, but it's intriguing to see the cliff and formations treated as its own subject. For some reason, I've recently been watching some YouTube videos of an off-road towing company based out of Moab. Perhaps it is to make me feel better about my own driving! The scenery is beautiful, but some of the terrain is extremely rugged. |

This is a well composed and sharp image of the rope detail. Your cropping in from the original helped better emphasize the details of the rope. I agree with Stephen that the upper left corner might work better if it were darker. |

Actually, I think the idea of a slight sepia tone might be interesting, although sepia often can be overdone to my way of thinking. I'd likely crop or clone out the black spot in the lower left corner as well. While the image as you've cropped it likely is more aesthetically pleasing to most, I prefer your original, which gives me a better sense of the vastness of this panel of art. |

While I agree with the others' comments that this is a busy image and that my eye did not go immediately to the shadows of the chairs, I think there is an interesting juxtaposition that Stephen alludes to in the busy clutter of the carnival equipment and the empty feeling created by the lack of people readily visible in the monochrome image. Your exposure appears well handled to me, especially with the tricky contrast between the bright lights and the shadows. Eliminating the bright building on the left was a good idea. |

Although I haven't seen the color version, this image seems to lend itself very well to monochrome. The lighting looks very natural to me in spite of your use of the flash. I may have preferred the second soldier to be slightly sharper, but that probably was tricky in the small space, and it doesn't bother me that he is not as sharp. On my monitor, the bottom half of the background is still quite bright, and that does compete with the subjects for my attention. I do like the hint of the walls/stonework, and it may be that it is my monitor rather than the image that needs adjusting, but I'd darken the lower part of the walls some more. |

My original image is horizontal, so I certainly could crop this one differently. When I edited this image, I thought the horizontal format better emphasized the bird and reflection pictorially, versus a nature image that would be more about the bird in its surroundings. But perhaps I'm wrong about that. I find that judges here in the U.S. often prefer closer/tighter images, while judges in Europe more generally seem to prefer more space around the subject. |
