You did as I suggested, but now that I've seen it, I think the way you had it originally is more effective. This composition creates a lot of dead space. However, if you were going to add a couple more wrenches or some other tools in the lower left and upper right corners, the diagonal might be more dynamic then. But of course, that would be a completely different image from the one you presented. |

Although I've spent quite a bit of time in the Golden Gate and Presidio areas of San Francisco, I do not recall ever being at this cemetery. I'll have to see if I can find it some time. I agree with the others' comments that you did a nice job with the composition, and the foggy, overcast weather suits the somber mood of the image. |

I agree with others that your composition and exposure are very well handled in this image. I've tried to photograph the interior of some covered bridges, including one near me in Wawona (Yosemite National Park), but not with anywhere near such a successful result. I tried cropping out the first cross-timber on the top, and to me, that helps emphasize the structure of the old bridge even more so. The graffiti is unfortunate (and very much a problem around here, too), but it is a part of the structure and its story, so I think you made the right decision to leave it in the image. |

Congratulations on the successful decorating project and image sale! While this composition works, if you try this again, what about putting the wrenches more on a diagonal? |

I, too, like the reflections created by the ball, and the juxtaposition of the large circular magnet is interesting. I agree that the paper is awkward, and think I'd be inclined to crop most or all of it out or convert it to black so it would blend in with the background (leaving the pattern in the reflection). I played a bit with cropping off the magnet on the left and bottom sides, and think that could work, too, if you are interested in a tighter composition. |

Interesting, as I initially thought this was a multiple exposure image of the same flower before I read your description. It may have been intentional to have all the stems except one darkened, but I believe I would prefer that one darkened, also, as I find it distracting me from the the flowers. I'm impressed by your ability to grow things. In spite of my farm upbringing, I don't seem to grow much of anything other than weeds and paperwork piles very successfully. |

I wish I were more creative, as I am envisioning some of these turned into eyes, arms and bodies for tool creatures. The lower, left area seems dark to me in comparison to the rest of the image, which looks well exposed. I'd probably try brightening the lower left part somewhat. I also think I'd clone in or otherwise add some extra black space around the edges. I realize they are in a frame and that you had no control over that, but the image feels just a little bit too tight for me. |

Is something like this what you had in mind? I like the full fence, but agree it does divide the subject(s). I do think I'd prefer the suggested crop if I had more of the building to the left. My original of this image doesn't have much more to work with there, so I'll have to keep in mind perhaps to try a wider angle from that perspective next time I am in Bodie.
For better and worse, many of the buildings at Bodie have newer roofs. I understand they were needed to prevent loss of the buildings completely. However, I wish they could have covered up the new roofing with some wooden shingles or something that would feel more authentic to me. |

Thanks Tom. I'm still not very skilled at masking, but I've written down your steps in my "Photoshop Notes" notebook, and I will review my masking notes and see if I can produce something similar to what you have done here. I think you're correct that cropping some more off the top might help, too. |
