Isn't it crazy how this tends to happen in the salons with the "also ran" images? The entries I think are worthwhile and spend lots of time perfecting get passed by, and my "throw in" 4th images get the acceptance. I would blame the judges, but I have judged a few PSA salons, so I'd risk self-incrimination doing that! It's interesting that when I first viewed this image before reading your description, I didn't question anything about it except the goat, which did seem odd in that location. I am impressed by your ability to come up with some sort of end concept at all with these montage creations, as I find coming up with my own concept rather than just copying (poorly) what I've seen elsewhere to be extremely challenging. If you do use this again, I'd suggest perhaps darkening the left side of the rock, as the bright area draws my attention from your real subjects. The size of the house versus the truck does have a bit of a perspective issue, but it just seemed like it might be a shed or poultry house, so it didn't bother me. |

The orchid is beautiful, and I really like the way you have it lit from the left. I do wonder if just a little bit of light in the shadows might help with the separation of the darker blossoms from the background, but I don't think I would add as much light/contrast as Stephen has, as it seems to me that the brighter blossoms loose something of their delicate, fragile appearance. Your candlestick is creative and does help to convey the "old world" feeling. |

These last two images are too red for me. Although I have occasionally witnessed the "red sky morning" phenomenon, I don't recall it being quite this intense. Thus, I think your original may be the "sweet spot" with this toning if the goal is to maintain a more natural appearance. |

While I thought I'd prefer less intensity, there is something about the heavier toning you chose originally that is more reminiscent of the intensity of the setting sun. This edit is pleasing, but after seeing both of them, I don't think this one has the same impact as your original. What do you think? |

I'm sensing a fog theme this month. It does make for some nice, moody images. With this one, I agree that you could crop a little more from the left side to draw more attention to the trees and light rays streaming through them. You've done a good job of avoiding hot spots, which is a challenge with so much bright fog. Like Stephen, I also like the hills in the background of your original image. Was that just too bright in the upper corner when you left that part of the subject in the monochrome image? |

We are starting to have some heavy winter fog here in the Central Valley, although San Francisco's fog can be a year-round occurrence, of course. It makes for neat photos, but also for some scary driving conditions. I like the color version of your image best, as the contrast between the red, white and blue colors helps make the image stand out to me. The monochrome seems to be losing some of that crispness, although adding more contrast might bring some of that back. I do agree with Stephen that the etching effect makes the fog more difficult for me to interpret, so if there is a way to apply the etching more selectively or only partially to the fog, it could be worth a try. |

I agree with you that this should meet the definition of monochrome, but some exhibitions and photographers have other ideas. Alas, I'm not aware that you enter the PSA salons, so you likely need not be concerned. The toning might benefit by slightly less intensity, but I do like your toned image over the "original 2" black and white. The toning helps emphasize the sunlight and the rays coming through the clouds. The foreground being in deep shadow works well here. While the subject is simple/ordinary, sometimes that's a good thing. |

Is this what you had in mind? I think it could work. |
