The composition and perspective in your image work fine for me. I'm afraid I'm not understanding your reference to the brick work patterns, so am not certain exactly what it is you're trying to eliminate. Did you mean the mortar lines, or the slight variations in shading? Either way, I don't find it bothersome, but it possibly could be cloned over or smoothed/softened somewhat. |

Somehow, I've missed out on the Texas State Railroad. I'll have to investigate on one of my trips back that way some time. I like your composition including the additional train cars, not just the engine. If you're trying to avoid darkening the trees, would it work to adjust the shadows/highlights on the smoke to add more separation? |

An interesting idea to add intrigue to the image. I agree with others' suggestions that including less of the sky would be my preference. I'm also wondering if you really need the tower and lights on the right. Is there some reason that you felt strongly about keeping them? |

I had a similar problem with a lack of trees in the Texas Panhandle. Somehow, I had lots of opportunities to photograph prairie dogs, though! I'm thinking I might get away with this image in nature if the sign were not so prevalent, but as is, if I were judging, I'd probably DQ it as having too much of the utility pole and sign, as Diana mentions. |

These photos make me cold just looking at them! To me, your contrast range between the blacks and whites works well. The original image feels weighted heavily to the left, perhaps because the brighter ice is on that side. I played with some cropping, but didn't come up with anything I liked better than what you did. I especially like the lines in the "Ice Angel" and image that appears just above it. While interesting images, the ones with the stick and shadows tend to draw my eye out of the frame, while the last two draw my attention more into the textures and details. Thus, those would be my vote for competition, but of course, judges all seem to have different ideas. |

I agree with the other comments that the image you used is the better of the two, even though Randy is not looking directly at you. On my monitor, the hair on the right side of the image is still a little bit bright, but you mention the image you entered is darker, so perhaps you've dealt with that already. Congratulations on the acceptance. |
