Considering the intensity of the sunlight, I think you did a good job of holding highlight and shadow detail in this image. Although I agree with the others that the separation of the climber from the wall is more defined in the color image, I think it also works in monochrome. I played with the dodging and burning a bit more. You likely could do much better than what I have here, but I'll attach it anyway and you can see what you think. |

The folk life festivals sound interesting, and I really like this image of the craftsman at work. The motion blur in the hammer, regardless of how it occurred, gives a sense of movement, and you've done a good job of leaving enough of the surroundings to show what is happening while eliminating most of the distracting elements. I do agree with Diana's suggestions to make the face a little bit lighter and crop out the basked on the left side of the image, as it competes for my attention. |

Thanks for the feedback. I've attached a color version of the image, but the sky in it may not be much better. I do find that several of the Topaz filters tend to add extra noise/grain to images. I may be able to adjust that better when applying the filter but will have to keep trying to figure that out. |

No, I don't think having some human elements in your images contradicts your theme. In this particular image, having the balloon adds to that theme for me, as a part of how the landscape speaks to us and draws us in is shown in the desire to drift above and thereby better admire it. I, too, like the single balloon used as a focal point in the monochrome image as a counter-point to the clouds and mountains. It makes the landscape appear more vast to me than that same landscape appears in the image without the balloon. (Stephen describes that much more eloquently.) Yes, balloons in color could work in some images, also, although in the demonstration images here, I personally prefer black and white version better, as it seems to fit best with the moodiness of these clouds. |

I, too, like the contrast in this image and your use of the curved staircase as a leading line. Although it is being extra picky, I recommend darkening the bright spot in the grass to the left of the staircase (which appears brown in the color image) and possibly darkening the upper right corner just a little more. I don't see why this wouldn't work in photo travel, although my own personal preference is for the monochrome version. |
