I like the composition including the farm/barn in the background, but like others, think I would eliminate some of the sky. To me, the monochrome/sepia versions of this image convey an antiquated feeling. That works well, but if it was your intention to tell the story of the modern Amish choosing to live without modern technology and equipment, then the color version seems to me to work better for that purpose. We were in Lancaster County this spring on a Sunday, so the mules weren't working. When we stopped to try to photograph a group of them standing in their pasture, they thought we had food and all came running to the fence. So much for that photo idea! |

I, too, like the way you've placed this on the diagonal. Getting rid of the rope and bag as Diana and Tom suggest helps eliminate those distracting elements. This seems to work well in monochrome, but I'm also wondering what it is like in color. |

Yikes, mud, snakes and cane toads would not be my idea of a good place to be! Interestingly, in the color image, I am not distracted by the background items, but I find they do compete for my interest with the tractor in the sepia version. The sepia image seems a bit dark on my monitor, so I tried increasing exposure a bit and then contrast, and think that helped. So thankful the tractors I drove growing up had enclosed cabs, as I can only imagine the dust and fumes this one would stir up. |

It's interesting that the perspective seems low, as I actually was standing on a cliff probably a good 4 to 5 meters above the beach where this otter and some others were coming ashore to rest. I think this one was stretching and scratching. Of course, for all I know, maybe an otter showing the bottom of its foot is like showing the sole of one's shoes in some countries ..... I, too wonder what they are thinking sometimes. |

The camp sounds like an interesting experience, albeit with lots of tricky photography conditions. Like Tom, I think I prefer the color image here. However, in both images, I am distracted by the softly focused ridge of snow in the foreground. I tried cropping it out, darkening the background trees, and sharpening only the bears. Perhaps I sharpened them a bit too much, but you can see what you think. I also tried brightening the eyes/face a little bit. |
