Thanks for the comments!
I see others struggle with what I have here - an amazing location lacking a good subject. The pine is the best I could do. Would be a great place for a "significant event" photo like a graduation or wedding. |

Sir - you have something here!
The strength of the bridge with those clouds is really strong in my opinion. (As Brian suggested.) Here are some picky ideas that may or may not add to what you have:
I would crop out the right side getting rid of the path and likely the blue building. The first tree on the left could be cropped out as well to reduce the complexity of the photo.
For me, the greens are not what they could be. This likely has to do with the strong sun. A circular polarizer might help by getting rid of some of the strong sun. However, you may be able to pick the greens from the trees and adjust the hue a bit to bring back some of the green. I've had some luck with adjusting the hue, but it is tricky.
Regardless, you seem to be beaconing me to take a holiday in India!

Brian,
This reminds me of a highway not far from where I grew up. Not much traffic and if you have a problem the next car might not come by for a day or so!
One day I was stopped talking a photo as you did - middle of the road with one of the few rock formations - when I noticed another photographer do my first suggestion: get a nice looking girl to do a cartwheel in the middle of the road!
This looks like a north/south road. I try to get the sun in the east/west road I'm referring to. That helps add in some feeling of desolation - although your strong shadows do help with this feeling.
I guess what is missing is some subject to complete the story.

Quang,
Toronto is one of my favorite cities and the building of all those apartments really changed downtown area near the lake. I have not talked to Canadians I know about this reality but I bet they are not happy about it.
That is the only real issue I see with the photo: that high-rise of apartments! It takes up a lot of space in the photo. One idea is to crop out the high-rise at the top left - although that could be tricky. Another idea is to use some sort of mask to reduce the exposure of the high-rise a bit.
What I love are the clouds and the Tower reaching into those clouds. That part of th photo is timeless.

Charles,
I do agree with Brian that the original sky might have been a keeper on this one...
One thought I have on similar shots I have is that the rock formations on either side of the photo frame the rock in the formations in the middle. Unfortunately the rock in the middle is relatively boring. An alternative I would experiment with is cropping out much of the rock on the right making the colorful rock on the left as the subject of the photo. Then the rock formations in the distance would just add depth to the photo.
With all I wrote, I will add: this is a fabulous photo! And I simply love Sedona and the area. I think you have a good capture regardless of my simplistic comments.

This is good feedback!
I like to experiment and this one has "something". But like others it lacks a good subject and I think that is what you are eluding to.... Let me give it a go, although I may decide I'm not "that good".
Regardless you nailed what I was struggling to put words to. Thanks!

As I told an old friend that retired last year: let me know if I can join your group of guys at the local filling station!
This captures what I see of, um, guys of a certain age I seem to be nearing - talking it up. What I love is the surrounding stonework showing isn't the "local filling station". The simple and almost secondary color of the stonework (and the different ages of the stonework) gives a nod that this is not the "new world".
In the end, we are all the same.... and hoping she doesn't spend too much on shoes again! |
