I really like where you are going with this photo. A photographer I have been following for a wile now takes photos of "common items" and adds a short title to push the observer toward the story. Then he tells more in his description - as you have here. But his composition is the real story teller.
Not sure if it would have been possible to get down level with the wheelbarrows and maybe taken a photo of one with some brick in the foreground - maybe with part of the kiln. Or with Mark's suggestion you could use a portrait composition with some brick in the foreground and the kiln in the background.

Still an amazing shot - you have sold me on vacationing in Australia at some point!
What I find amazing about the photo is the composition. Just understanding where to be to take the shot impresses me! |

I really like the tree with changing leaves contrasting with the rest of the trees with green leaves. There are so many options here it is hard to wrap my mind around what to recommend without experimenting. I would also find that difficult in a hallowed place like this.
One advantage of Mark's advice is you could have a little more of the headstones shown with the regular geometry of the grave placement (several classic photos come to mind).
I do like the photo and the colors... adds to the feeling of the location. |

I really like the mood set by the colors and low light. Capturing the rower at that moment really adds to the photo. I really like this one. |

I like the crop - but the original isn't available for comparison. The one thing I noticed on this one is the colors are subdued due to the lighting conditions. Brightening up the photo and bringing back the colors just a little would really make the rainbow "pop". The brick in the tower would also add to the photo with a little LR magic. |
