83 Oct 24 Reply Michael - Here is the color one. Color or B&W? That question deserves to be added (and pinned?) to our discussion forum. My answer(s) is this: I prefer B&W [a] unless the color(s) REALLY adds a unique dimension to the picture (e.g. a sunset) and/or [b] when the color(s) get in the way of the details or the mood of the image (e.g. see the attached color image). Let me give you another example, Lance's awesome moonshine(?) distillery picture fits both [a] and [b]. Colors would get in the way of the details and change the mood of the picture. I hope this makes sense. Thanks for asking the question Oct 14th
83 Oct 24 Comment Elsie - As I'm preparing for Milton to go overhead in a couple of days I'm struck by how transient your image is. A little whisp of wind and the feathers are gone. A stronger blow and the one leaf is gone, etc. Also, a few drops of rain changes the look and feel. Thanks for the image. Oct 8th
83 Oct 24 Comment Clark - Great job on the lighting of this picture! I also like how well you combined the crispness and details of the fabric of the dress with the softness of her hair and "daintiness" of her hands resting on the window sill. The one thing that bothers me slightly is the look in the model's eyes. In her case, she might have been better off looking in the distance through the window. Bottom line, great job using the window and curtains as a softbox. Amazing light! Oct 8th
83 Oct 24 Comment Don - Love the picture. You did a great job capturing the light. Did you take and HDR picture to be able to so clearly show the details of the ceilings and delicate Arabic writing on the copula, yet be able to show the details of the black abaya?

To your first question, I think the walking person adds to, doesn't subtract from the picture. The softness and flow of fabric contrasts with the geometric rigidity of all the other shapes.

Regarding your second question, I agree with you that there is a slight something-something that might bother some about the angle of the picture. I'm wondering if the camera is not ever so slight askew. If you draw a vertical line down across the three windows at the top of the picture, that line doesn't quite align with the one emerging from the bottom of the image. Regardless, very, very interesting image with nicely intricate details. Job well done!

83 Oct 24 Comment Lance - WOW, I love this picture. The leading lines of the floor, the wire netting, and the wall on the left obviously draw me in. However there is also a compositional clash with the round barrels and spots of light. As you pointed out, this picture begged to be taken on film and the noise and light spilling from the windows likely would look very differently ("cleaner", "artificial" on a digital original). I would not be surprised if I turned over your printed picture and saw that it was taken almost 100 years ago during the prohibition. Credit to you for making me believe in this story! Oct 8th
83 Oct 24 Comment Adi, I love the tension you are looking for. May I add another dimension of tension (say this 10 times fast). As a former beach volleyball player, I struggle with the fact that this court hasn't been used in some time since the steps in the sand all go horizontally. If the net had been used recently, some steps would be vertical, facing the net. Also, lines in the sand marking the dimensions of the court are long gone... How sand, hmmm, I mean how sad! Oct 8th
83 Oct 24 Comment Michael, I love how everyone in the image is looking down. Those in the background because they are looking at their screens; the lady in the foreground because she is enjoying life through an ice cream. The fact that she is alone, has no wedding band and has unkempt hair makes me wonder what is her story. Great piece of street photography! Oct 8th
83 Oct 24 Comment Thank you for your kind words Don - Ooops, good catch about the the lines in the top right... I'll correct them right now. Oct 8th
