Nice picture Piers!
I'm amazed that your image is so sharp considering your lens and shutter speed. And that 1/600 was fast enough to catch the wings! I really like how the bee isn't sitting static on the flower but just touching it - one can tell that it's just about to leave or land. I love the sharp perimeter of the flower - I wonder how it would look if you darkened the background a bit. Not a critique - just curious. |

Thanks Piers, I didn't think of taking out the top left shadow. I was hoping it would balance with the bottom right dark area. But I think you're onto something - I will try it. Thanks for your insights!

Hi Jim!
I really like the high key and monochrome adjustments that you did to this picture. I too feel that the handle could go - sometimes leaving context out provides a bit of mystery, which is also valuable. I would also print this picture if it were mine. I like it! |

Hi Martin,
I enjoy seeing your creativity which has taken your original image into a new realm. The lady's face is interesting and a bit unsettling as the emotions on her left side disagree with those on her right side. It adds a bit of mystery to it - what is she feeling? It's neat that you managed to show her emotions with so little visual information. Thanks for showing this picture. |

Hi Karen, I really like your composition in this picture! The orange, being the only real colour, makes it interesting. I think the ice was a great idea too. Here are some ideas that came to mind but please don't think of them as critisisms at all:
Consider holding the bottle by its bottom so we don't see part of your hand. It changes the light on the bottle.
Also, maybe put a reflective surface, like white poster board next to your camera. It would reflect light back from the softbox. I think this would add nice reflections in the glass and it may not be necessary to brighten things in post.
Just some ideas - I like your picture a lot.
Cheers! |

Thanks Karen. Now that you mention that shadow, it feels like a rock in my shoe - it has to go. Thanks for noticing and mentioning it - I totally agree with you. Cheers! |

What an exciting and beautiful picture! I've experienced how difficult it can be to aim one's camera in the dark, and your composition feels perfect. The red aurora isn't a colour I've seen here in Canada. It's striking. I like the highway and the city lights. The stars sitting in the dark sky at the top of your picture frames it beautifully. The little green road sign is like a pleasant surprise. I like how your picture makes it hard to turn away. Thanks for sharing it. |
