Sometimes conditions are just not right for a beautiful portrait. I echo what Mervyn said. The leaves on the left should be cropped out and a square or vertical crop would suit this picture better. |

Thank you Mervyn. Haha, yes, that was a few years back and getting back up was a little easier. |

If only that structure wasn't there in the BG. Nice capture. I feel the crop is good as the focus is on its face and the "decisive moment." |

Nice capture Pierre. I think if you dropped down the camera to near eye level the grass in the BG would be of no consequence. You could lighten his eye a little, which might bring out some color and detail there.
It"s great having in-camera focus stacking. A few years back I made myself a stacking gizmo using an Arduino board. It works great for still subjects but not so much for creatures as it is not as fast as the in-camera system. |

Beautiful and difficult capture. The editing has brought out the brightness on the subject and I agree with Mervyn on brightening the second bird. The stump may also benefit with a little brightening, at least for the top portion. I read that you didn't want to go higher on the ISO. If you did, you would be able to stop down more and possibly get the second bird also in focus. The newer cameras can easily handle going up to 6400 ISO. I also use one of the Denoise plugins, Topaz Denoise or DXO Pureraw. The latter works on RAW files and outputs a DNG file and is great to rid the noise. I am kinda "old school" and never liked pushing my ISO beyond 1600 or so for fear of noise but after using the R5 I have been pleasantly surprised how far it can be pushed. |

I love this image. Technically, it's perfect. The colors are great, and I like the expression on his face. The original, though, is of a different moment in time and is pretty good in its own right. |
