Thank you all for the comments. The law says one should not be outside the vehicle unless accompanied by a qualified ranger etc. They are stricter in Kruger where self-drive tourists tend to step out for a closer look. Reading the body language of the animals, the guides usually will not allow the clients to exit the vehicles unless they think it is safe. I have been on the ground with elephants (one of whom was not very happy with my proximity: about 15 ft, but after expressing his displeasure he went his way. My sphincters were a little tight, and I am not sure I breathed at all. I did manage to take a picture of him towering over me but with the 200-400 the distance was too short for it to attain focus. Rhinos are a different matter. It's difficult to read them and they are short sighted and will charge at movement if agitated. I'll post pictures soon. Not very artistic though.
As a side note, I am retiring from practice next March and have signed up for school in S. Africa to be a safari guide. I am not doing it for employment but more to further my knowledge of the flora and fauna. |

I think this composition works as is with horizontal perspective. If you wanted the whole shadow, I would shoot it in a vertical perspective so as not to give too much dead space where the shadow would fall and prevent the bird from being too close to the top of the frame. The bird is sharp and the colors are good. A lower perspective view would have blurred the background better. But then again, I don't know what was in the BG to begin with. |

The wonders of that li'l camera in your phone (or is it the other way around?). Try to shoot RAW and run it through Gigapixel. I am not sure how much it can help but I have seen some good results with that software.
I don't know for sure how the camera was being held for this photo, but to get a nice low viewpoint you can hold the camera upside down making the lens closer to the surface. |

Great shot. Love the light and the colors.
I am not sure I understand what you meant about cropping and resizing. If you have Topaz Gigapixel you can run it through that software and resize it the way you want it.
I hope you are having fun in CR. One of the best places for birds. |

A technically difficult shot made even better with the beautiful light. Love it. |

I do enjoy the two bud crop as I think it balances out the larger bud. I wish there was a little more light on the bud and the three leaves. |

Excellent composition and picture that captures the protective spirit of the mother elephant. If I were to change something, it would be to add a light vignette. |
