74 Jan 24 Reply Thanks Stacy for viewing! Jan 27th
74 Jan 24 Reply Well it turns out my original image post was designed for printing to a matte medium, hence a slight "edge" in terms of sharpness. Here is a more appropriate digital version which is more representative. Thanks again for all of the group's comments. Jan 26th
74 Jan 24 Reply Thanks Ed. I'll play with that as it is a graded fade so to speak. Jan 26th
74 Jan 24 Reply Thanks Stacy. I thought I posted earlier, maybe I hit the wrong button!

Appreciate the color comments. And, yes it is part of a series of B&W images I have been working on with a definite theme. The current web versions can be seen here: https://edpalphotography.photoshelter.com/index/G0000cWWqX83c80k

Thanks again for commenting. I'll look at at a softer rendition.

74 Jan 24 Comment Hey Stacey, great crop as the face is it, especially in Mono. I agree with Melissa to see if the left side of the face highlights can be toned down to reveal more detail. The eyes have a lot of soul... Jan 15th
74 Jan 24 Comment Haru, good "feel" of the snow on the trees. It's the softness that sometimes is tough to capture. My eyes start at the top, follow the descending branches on either side and then back to the top! Nicely presented. Jan 15th
74 Jan 24 Comment Hey Trevor, great capture and composition. And, yes removing the distracting color takes you straight to those eyes and the entire subject! I agree with Melissa too, maybe a vignette to darken some of the lower highlights. Nicely done. Jan 15th
74 Jan 24 Reply Thanks Melissa. My intent for the image title was to try and induce one to think about what you are seeing and maybe relate to a cycle of dormancy and growth as opposed to being descriptive... Jan 15th
74 Jan 24 Reply Thanks Haru for your thoughtful comments. Yes, we as humans are hardwired for color. And that color is tied to emotional responses. Once we go to B&W that is removed and are presented with an enigma or as you have aptly stated "puzzled". Now the viewer's attention is trying to figure out what the image is "saying". We are left with shapes, texture, lines and shadows or very elemental components of an image.
Personally, the color version reminds me more of a color plate in a guide book rather than an artistic interpretation. B&W images remind me of a quote: "You look at color images while you look into B&W images". I do not know the attribution...

74 Jan 24 Reply Thanks. Photographing wildlife is always challenging and fraught with failures; not like studio work at all! I enjoy the challenge and learn about each species and their environment evertime I do this. Jan 8th
74 Jan 24 Comment Thank you Melissa. Yes I composed and processed with all of those items in mind. Initial reactions are very important to me to let me know if the vision comes across... Jan 8th
74 Jan 24 Reply Always a challenge to get that right look. Thanks for your detailed reply. Jan 7th
74 Jan 24 Comment Happy New Year to you Ed!

What a size comparison indeed. If you don't look you can miss that smaller boat. I am sure you were limited in where you shot this image but I am wondering of other perspectives would make this image even more dramatic...

74 Jan 24 Comment Hey Melissa, nice "grab" image as that is the only way to catch these buggers. I was in the Tetons at the Mormon Barns and one area there is filled with these ground warrens. So I "waited" for some of these to pop up and sure enough they did but you have to be quick. One anatomical feature I think is significant is the lack of any real external ear structure as they are tunnel dwellers...
Just for grins, I post my effort...
