Hi Julie, thank you. My club's rules for nature competitions are: Images including the "hand of man" (such as roads, fences, manicured lawns, etc.) will be disqualified. Any adjustments to the image must appear natural. |

Hi Sharon, thank you for critiquing my photo! I appreciate your comments. I'll see if I have better nature images to submit for my competition. |

Hi Mike, thanks for reviewing my photo! I agree it looks better without the lower limb of the tree. Good advice! |

Hi Catherine, good eye! Great shot! I like that you were eye level with the gull. I didn't notice the chick at first. Maybe you can lighten the chick to make it stand out more? Or crop some of the sky at the top to bring more attention to the subjects. I've never seen a gull chick before. How did you get so close to them? Great zoom? |

Hi Ling Ling, I really like this image! Nice job of catching the eye, diagonal limb, nice green blurred background. I agree with Julie that you're very lucky to have a colony of night herons living near you! I was also going to suggest using a square (1:1) crop, as Shari mentioned. This will get rid of the messy twigs on the right and will crop off some of the left side so the diagonal twig will reach the corner of the image. However, you might want to put the bird at the left 1/3 line so that it has breathing room on the right side. And then you'll need to redo the vignette since all of the edges will have moved. |

Hi Don, I'm so sorry for the loss of your mother. It's a really nice photo to remember your mom. I like how the sweaters are tack sharp, evenly spaced, and all hung at the same height. The one on the far right is hot pink which draws my attention to the side rather than the center of the image and makes it look more cheerful. I don't know if you'd like this image in black and white - maybe that would look too sad. I actually didn't even notice the burgundy wall on the right, but I think it'd be easy to change to black by selecting a background mask in Lightroom and lowering the exposure to black. |

Hi Shari, you did a great job of post processing! The colors nicely contrast each other with the fresh, bright red and green against the old carved wood. I like others' suggestions of cropping the top. The image makes us wonder why the flowers are there. Happy lovers ran off? A date was a no show? You could have people or objects as props to add to the story (wedding rings? wedding invitation? renewal of vows by people who carved their initials there a long time ago?) |

Hi Julie, this is really interesting and creative! Great idea! I haven't tried light painting yet other than photographing my Indian neighbors celebrating Diwali with sparklers. I tried to get the kids to swirl the sparklers in a circle around their face but they kept blocking my view of their face. |

Hi Andrew, I love your image! This is the kind of photography I like best! It's a really beautiful scene! I like the crops on left and right. The vertical seems straight. I can't tell about the horizon line being straight or tilted up a bit on the right side. You could crop off the top half of the sky and just leave the bottom half of it there to show the height of the waterfalls but not to draw so much attention. The various tones of green are really nice. You could see if more saturation would make it stand out even more as long as it still looks natural. Maybe add a very thin vignette to the edges. If you ever go back, it'd be nice to see this with a longer exposure so the water becomes smooth and silky. You might need a ND filter to do that. |
