7 Apr 25 Comment Thanks Hoshedar - I really like what you did - thank you Apr 23rd
7 Apr 25 Comment I'm really at a loss to review this image for several reasons - first it has a ton of impact and tells a terrific story - just a dynamite capture and if I were judging in a photo club contest I'd give it a 10 on a ten point scale with the following caveat - "An absolutely spectacular capture that would not score well in a PSA Nature competition due to the lack of detail - but, in the OPEN category, wow, it's a winner because it's a dramatic and dynamic story while being a bit surreal - that said, in my VF I removed the two static pelicans and converted to BxW (discoloration in the color version) I felt detracted from the story as well as being a bit at odds with the image title - "White Pelicans LANDING on Delvalle Lake" with landing being the operative word. I also re-cropped to focus more on the synchronicity of the action -
All in all, a wonderful shot, wish I had take it

7 Apr 25 Comment This image could be spectacular, all that's missing is the full body - your subject matter, lghting and technical work are A+++ i.e., a compelling subject separated from its background. That said, I feel including the entire subject down to the Fiddler's feet, would work a bit better. Good for you, this is a keeper. Apr 14th
7 Apr 25 Reply You're welcome, I really enjoy your work each month Apr 8th
7 Apr 25 Comment Whoa! Hoshedar, you da man! What a perfect wildlife capture - and you give too much credit to luck - capturing this type of actions isn't accidental - terrific job Apr 7th
7 Apr 25 Comment Judith, this is a beautiful image, in fact, more of a work of art, so congrats, you really created something. Having said that, the first thing that caught my eye when I looked at the image were those 'lines' to the lower right of the vase. Also, what occured to me was to flip the image horizontally to let those lines work for you leading the viewer's eye from lower left into the image and I thought that worked better. Then I decided to remove those lines with the flipped format. It's a gorgeous image and I mean gorgeous, however, I can't deny where my eye went first - But regardless, this scores a 10 in any photo club competition - great job Apr 7th
7 Apr 25 Comment You certainly have a story Tom, which is what photography is about - next time, may I suggest taking a lower perspective - I can visualize getting down low and shooting up from below the lead fur trader with that hammer - but as is, still a nice shot, Apr 7th

67 Apr 25 Comment Thanks for your comments Susan - and to answer your question, usually in PSA competitions it seems that behavior is always key, however every now and again, a good portrait works too, maybe not as well, but sometimes they're just nice. In any event, it was a great memory - thanks again Apr 14th
67 Apr 25 Comment The edge is known as "as stroke" something I just learned, I used to call it a border but was corrected - anyway, I agree with you 100%, digitally I like "the stroke" but would not use it if I were printing it - nonetheless, good eye, good shot Apr 14th
67 Apr 25 Comment Susan, I thought you did a nice job with this capture - I'm curious if you shot this hand-held or using a tripod with a gimbal head - it it were handheld at 500mm with a 1.4 extender I thought you did a very credible job. Re: settings, Larry is the real expert, but unless a bird is stationary and I KNOW it's going to stay stationary, I usually begin with Auto ISO, Av f11, especially for large birds like eagles and 1/2500th second but usually 1/3200th second TV - I'd rather have a touch too much noise from a higher ISO than a soft image Apr 14th
67 Apr 25 Comment David - great eye, don't think I would have seen that and great thought, I love the simplicity and minimalistic aspect of this image. In my VF I flipped in LR because we read left to right, darkened the background to help the image pop and added a 2mm border because I thought it added to the image - but a very artistic image in any case, as I said, great eye. Apr 8th
67 Apr 25 Comment Bud, bravo, a terrific shot. In my VF I thought the image could benefit from cropping in to eliminate much of the business but and also to show the detail in the subjects' eyes, feathers, etc. I lightened them a bit more and darkened the stoop they're perched on to draw the viewer's eye- nice job. Apr 8th
67 Apr 25 Comment Cindy - what a terrific shot of a jaguar, which I don't think are that easy to photograph, or we see a lot more jaguar shots - kudos for that. Also kudos on capturing the subject looking into your lens, that helps a lot - the down side is the perspective of shooting high to low and the busy background. In my VF I cropped in, played with contrast in the Nik Suite to separate the subject from the background and opened the shadows so the viewer could see both front legs and lastly, brightened the subject's eyes a bit - not sure if it's better, but it's an alternative Apr 7th
67 Apr 25 Comment Michael - I can't help with the editing, that's Larry's department but I will say I like your composition inasmuch as it tells a story, which isn't always easy with landscape images - the time of day was not your friend here. I find the image interesting and it compels me to want to look around for some detail or magic light. Besides, deep canyons in general aren't the easiest scenes to compose but you did a nice job. The Grand Canyon of the Pacific is special, good for you. Apr 7th
67 Apr 25 Comment Talk about the decisive moment - this is just outstanding Larry, congrats on this - Interaction, story and a fantastic perspective - thanks for sharing Apr 7th

73 Apr 25 Comment Thanks Sherry, and sorry for not responding sooner but the site no longer notifies me when someone comments on either my photos or my comments, so I have to make it point to check once in a while - anyway, I really appreciate your thoughtful comments Apr 14th
73 Apr 25 Comment Great job removing those distractions and mission accomplished bringing home such a unique memory of that trip - great composition, DOF, detail, light and reflections - Apr 8th
73 Apr 25 Comment A truly gorgeous sunset image Ian, and I agree, the clouds act as great leading lines - the image has immediate impact and warm color of the water gives your image a most pleasing tone. I didn't feel the dark areas on either side of the reflected water helped the image, so in my VF I cropped in and down to keep your 4x6 format that works well here. I also opened the shadows and added a bit of texture and clarity in LR to bring out some detail in the water, that I feel is the star of the show, and toned down the highlights to focus on the tranquil beauty of the scene - really like this image Apr 8th

97 Apr 25 Reply Christ - you raise an outstanding point regarding the maker's vision. Not knowing what was in the maker's mind, I took my cue from the maker's title "Starling Wellness," which is why titles are so important. Apr 27th
97 Apr 25 Reply Appreciate your kind words - it's an interesting experience although the greater migration occurs about 800 miles north in Nebraska where there were more than 750,000 cranes along the Platte River last year. I shot that 5 years ago - the coldest I've ever been in my life :-( Apr 27th
97 Apr 25 Reply Thanks Doc, your words are appreciated Apr 27th
97 Apr 25 Reply I keep thinking about what you said and at first blush I agree but the more I look at the image, I'm not sure where the crane or cranes should go without sacrificing the composition. Anyway, between you and Kathleen I learned what I needed to know, so thank you Roy.

Best,
Apr 25th
97 Apr 25 Reply Thanks for your comment Kathleen, I agree with you, the image does not pop, but the subject is birds and I've never had this evaluated. Thanks again Apr 25th
97 Apr 25 Comment I love the action and the image in general, at the same time, I see Roy's point, I believe the image would present better if the entire image were softly blurred or if your center of interest was more clearly defined. Apr 25th
97 Apr 25 Comment Great story and outstanding detail - the water droplet adds immensely to this image Roy - just terrific.

In my VF I brightened the Heron and added a touch of texture and clarity 2:1 in LR, but either way, this is a pure winner!

97 Apr 25 Comment Kathleen, this is just elegant, what a lovely capture - since we read left to right I flipped it LR and would like your opinion as to whether flipped makes it easier for the eye to go thru the frame Apr 8th
97 Apr 25 Comment Julia, a lovely egret and a great perspective. Kudos on your histogram, egrets are easy to overexpose so nice job in capturing the detail in the subject's feathers, eye and bill. The background is busy so I removed some distractions and cropped in to remove even more while still keeping enough environment (the nest) - I also brightened the subject head and bill area. One bit of advice, and while this is close, wildlife images tend to have more impact when the subject is facing within 90* of the camera lens unless it's specifically a profile. Apr 8th
97 Apr 25 Comment You used the term "wonderful", I say "Perfect" - nice job Peter, it's always a pleasure looking at your work Apr 8th
97 Apr 25 Comment Christ - I think you did a nice job in reducing highlights and getting the exposure right and image has an ethereal feel to it. However, dark draws the eye as much as does bright and the uneven background is distracting; and did you really want to "blend out" the tail feathers? Having said that getting this as sharp as you did with excellent detail in that environment using an 840mm focal length is just outstanding. Apr 8th
