Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
7 Jul 24 Reply Thank you Rich, yes I was fortunate to capture the image. I have a series of images (I was using Hi-speed auto) but the rainbow was best in this particular shot, which is why I used it here. Jul 26th
7 Jul 24 Comment Thank you for your comments, much appreciated Jul 24th
7 Jul 24 Comment Hoshedar, I was the photographer-in-residence at a safari camp in Kenya and have spent roughly 200 or so days in the bush, so I get it. Every time I saw a lone lioness hunt it the animal was either obscured by trees and bushes or was 500 yards away - still great capture - tells a story :-) Jul 15th
7 Jul 24 Comment Tom - yes the headstone on the far left does hold the eye for a second or so, but even if removed, my eye would still wander through the image. I think the image needs a clear center of interest, in this case, you have head stones and a church. Jul 12th
7 Jul 24 Comment A sure high score in a PSA Nature competition because it's A) technically spot on and B) tells a great story. In a photo club comp I don't think it would fare as well because the image is a bit static. Nice job capturing the subject's eyes, always critical in wildlife photography Jul 11th
7 Jul 24 Comment Rich - I think it's basically an interesting composition but with a 20mm lens you have quite of a bit of distortion. But first, the image itself, in my VF I thought your clouds needed to pop a bit more so I added texture and clarity in LR, but at the same time, I thought there was too much sky for the scene so I cropped in using a 5x7 format, that I thought might be more pleasing; and to get a fix on the distortion I leveled the fountain at the end of the walkway figuring water always follows the law of gravity, so as you can see, perpendicular lines aren't perpendicular and parallel lines aren't quite parallel. If you intended the distortion then forget what I wrote and just give some thought to just bringing out the clouds a bit more and cropping a bit tighter Jul 11th
7 Jul 24 Comment Tom, you did a nice job on this and as expected you did a nice job technically. The image has a lot of visual interest and tells its story plainly. Having said that, I find my eye bouncing between the headstones and the church - I'm not sure how I would improve the composition but images with a COI and where the viewer remains focused on a single subject tend to do better in compositions in my opinion - still, a really nice and different capture Jul 4th
7 Jul 24 Comment Gaetan - great image with a ton of visual interest and a fair degree of impact. You've framed the subject nicely and the subject stands out against what could have been a distracting background, and my only issue is that I feel the leading line formed by the stone partition leads the viewer out of the frame and away from the subject - still, a creative perspective and well done technically. Jul 4th
7 Jul 24 Comment Wow Judith - no way on earth would attempt to capture a flying subject at 1/320th second - as I said wow, nice job! I understand your comment about a 'busy' background but frankly I don't think it hurts the image, in fact it tells a story. One of the photo clubs I belong is a stickler on wildlife composition and I'm sure some might comment about how the left side of the frame doesn't add to the image, but I'm not so sure. The image has a clear COI, it's well composed, technically spot on and the colors are perfect. Hard to complain about - thanks for sharing Jul 4th

73 Jul 24 Comment Sherry - one more try on the VF Jul 25th
73 Jul 24 Comment Thanks for your comments Ian - Ah judging! Yup, I get it, I do a bit of judging at various clubs when asked and I was most fortunate that when I joined my first photo club our comp committee required judge to focus on teaching while critiquing, and if a judge gave a score of 4 (we scored on a 5 point basis but no one ever got a 1 or 2) he or she was asked to explain why it was a 4 and not a 5 or what the maker would have to do to make it a 5. It's something I try to get across in my reviews in PSA study and digital discussion groups - I hope that's obvious in my comments of others - anyway, thank you again for your comments Jul 22nd
73 Jul 24 Comment Sherry - no go, so I'll email you my VF image, I've now tried three times and the image will not load. Jul 21st
73 Jul 24 Comment Sherry - what's so frustrating is that I cannot review more than one image without leaving the site because sometimes the the PSA site won't allow me to load and other times the site loads a previous image, as happened with your image. In my visual feedback I cropped down on the sky so it occupies the upper third of the frame instead of the upper half and added a bit of texture, contrast and clarity, then did some dodging and burning to focus the viewer's eye and the interesting road that leads the viewer thru the buttes - I just hope it loads this time. 73 Jul 24 Comment Sherry and Dave pretty much nailed it vis-a-vis your title, and the fact that it's a great story of desolation and starkness that includes a sense of hope - good for you.

From a purely photographic standpoint perhaps a lower perspective shooting up at the trees and including the tops of the trees may have been more dramatic, but still a nice job.

73 Jul 24 Comment Gary - an interesting shot - I did a review yesterday but it would not load so I'm trying again. As I said, an interesting shot but what bothers me is no clear center of interest. I wasn't there, but if you have a chance to re-shoot sometime, perhaps you could really crop in as I'm sure there are some fascinating compositions - also, I think the dead trees are a distraction.

Your metadata indicates the image was shot around 4:30 PM in May and sunset was a little after 8:00 PM, so perhaps shooting later closer to sunset may have provided more shadows and thus more interest - still a nice shot, but I still feel you may not have tapped its full potential

73 Jul 24 Comment A beautiful keepsake image anyone would hold dear - it just has nice feel to it. As a competition image I don't think it would do very well. The very powerful vertical fights with the star of the show, the winding river, for attention. Also, there are some random leave in the upper part of the image I promise a judge would nick you for that - but as a photo to keep and say "I've been there" - just a great shot Jul 20th

73 Jul 24 Comment Peter, this is a fantastic shot - perhaps not for someone from Buffalo, but wow, you really captured the Horseshoe Falls beautifully.

I liked this shot so much I just had to play with it - I wanted to see what it might look like without the hand of man. Nothing major, just removing HOM and pumping up the contrast and a minor crop - anyway, I hope you like my renditions but congrats on a winner.

73 Jul 24 Comment Sherry and Gary thanks for your kind words. And to answer your question Sherry, I enjoy competing because it makes me feel good when I do well.
