7 May 24 Comment Tom - great image of the 'gator - in my VF I removed the distraction (wood, stone???) above the subject's snoot in PS and brightened the subject's eye May 31st
7 May 24 Comment Judith - you did a lot of really nice things in capturing this "Soggy Robin" - clear center of interest, sharp eye with catchlight and great detail in the subject's feathers. When I looked at your settings, I think you may have been better served with f9 - f11 versus f5.6; while the main interest (the head and body feathers) is sharp, the sharpness tails off and the subject's tail feathers are a bit soft and I believe that all parts of a subject should be acceptably sharp. I also cropped down to re-compose the image eliminating the dual background of grey and green and bring the subject in closer to feature the great detail you have in the image - I then desaturated the limited green at the top of the frame to help it blend in. I also sharpened the image, brightened the subject's eye to make the pupil more visible and darkened the subject's legs to help them stand out against the background. It may sound like a lot of editing but this is an excellent image as presented, I just tried to make it pop a bit more. May 31st
7 May 24 Comment Gaetan - As you've probably read, I will be the group's newest member next month and really looking forward to participating. I think Tom said it best, "You have a nice peaceful image," and I could not agree more. Having said that, in my VF I offer an alternative - I added contrast throughout and added a slight vignette - would love your thoughts as to how you feel they affect your image. Regardless, clear COI, well composed and a feeling of peacefulness are all a part of your image - very nice job May 31st
7 May 24 Comment Barbara - I'll be joining the group next month but Tom invited me to review some images while awaiting my turn in the barrel - :-) You checked all the boxes, clear COI, tack sharp subject, detail in the dark feathers, catchlight in the eye, a nature story vis-a-vis the subject singing and excellent composition - for a PSA image I would not touch a thing - for a photo club competition you might consider removing a part of the twig that crosses in front of the subject and a bit of the branch in front of the subject - see my VF - just a terrific & winning image - very nice job! 7 May 24 Comment Paul - my name is Butch Mazzuca, I'm in DD 73 but I'll be a part of this group next month and Tom invited me to comment on this month's images.

To begin, I agree with everyone else in the group, great subject to capture. When I first looked at the image my eye was drawn to the very dominant eggs and then to the bright area above the hatchling before it settled on the subject. I feel you have three distinct aspects of this image, the subject, the three eggs and the messy background above the chick. In my VF I tried to make the hatchling the first thing that caught my eye but brightening the subject, the subject's eye and minimizing all else in the frame by dodging and burning.

7 May 24 Comment Hello Hoshedar, my name is Butch Mazzuca, I'm in DD 73 and ran across your image, which I love btw. And I'm commenting because I have a similar image already composed "in my mind's eye" that like yours is dominated by a very powerful leading line, and where I'm just waiting for a brilliant sunrise before I shoot it.

There are a lot of positives to your image, and the first thing that strikes me is its technical quality- wow, you did a really nice job. Secondly, there's a lot of visual interest in this image, so again, nice capture. At the same time however, instead of a clear center of interest I feel there are three (3) "areas of interest" that will grab the viewer's eye - first, the powerful leading lines leading the viewer to the stone towers in the center of the frame, second, the wall and stone figures on the right, and third, the verticals on the left. No question that each is interesting, but I feel they compete for the viewer's attention and believe the image would have more impact if there was more cohesion in its composition to lead the viewer smoothly through the frame. There's also a fourth (4th) aspect that draws the eye - the sky, which occupies about half the frame. So, while this is a most interesting and technically spot on image, I feel it would benefit from a more cohesive flow. In my Visual Feedback I thought I would try an alternative composition that might take better advantage of your powerful leading line.

36 May 24 Comment Lori- I'm not in this group but I was scrolling thru DD groups and happened upon DD 36 and asked Barbara Miller if she would put me in it because Larry Treadwell taught a PSA course I had to drop out of due to an injury - but thought he was the one of the best reviewers I've ever come across and I hope she still puts me in when there's space. That said, your image is boffo. I thought this image had immediate impact and was just fun to look at. I'm originally from Chicago and the old Chicago Theater on State Steet is similar but frankly I like this shot better because of how it's isolated vis-a-vis the signage on the Chicago Theater, plus the motion blur of the car at night really ads to its visual interest - terrific shot - I'm in Scapes 73 if you want to visit May 12th

55 May 24 Comment Lori, I've left the group although I didn't realize Barbara would drop my after I submitted an image - but regardless, I had to comment on your image - which is boffo - and great choice in sky replacement, sometimes people choose skies that quite fit with the rest of the image - I give you a solid 10 on both the composition and the sky replacement - I hope you enter it into a photo club competition because it will do well May 12th

73 May 24 Comment It was relatively warm that day - I checked temperature history and it was 27 degrees when I took this shot. May 31st
73 May 24 Comment Thank you Peter - I'm really proud of this shot and was just happy I was able to pull it off and really appreciate the acknowledgement May 29th
73 May 24 Reply Thank you Ian, your comments are appreciated - I was taking Larry's Treadwell's PSA course on competition images and was trying to do "something different" - your acknowledgment means a lot May 23rd
73 May 24 Reply I was far too frugal with my compliments before - I've never seen a photo of the Mara I enjoyed more - this is just terrific - sorry, but when I first went to respond to this we had a bit of an accident with our dog :-( and I just hit the submit and should have taken my time - outstanding image. May 21st
73 May 24 Comment Dhananjay - the color in your image is spectacular, so nice job and gorgeous sunset silhouettes always make for interesting photos. After the initial impact and my eye moves around the frame, three things strike me - first, I agree with Sherry about the telephone pole, you should eliminate it, next the blown out white in the center of the frame, my eye is drawn to that as well and lastly, I wish there were more of the church silhouetted - still gorgeous color and an interesting pano May 17th
73 May 24 Comment Thank YOU Larry - you should know, even though I had to leave your course, I did not leave the lessons learned, and do consider you the most thorough and helpful reviewer I've ever come across - with every image I shoot now I think two things Impact & Visual Interest, so thank you again

PS - I've asked Barbara to put me in your group when there's an opening

73 May 24 Reply OK, I'll try again - and would love your thoughts regarding my edits

73 May 24 Reply Thank you Sherry - you kind words are appreciated May 13th
73 May 24 Reply Thank you Gary - and you're correct, capturing that shot took a lot of energy - glad you enjoyed it

Best,

73 May 24 Reply If you use LR and PS send me your email address and I'll send you a step-by-step of how to focus stack - I used to teach digital photography when I lived in Vail can can send you the PDF I used for my classes May 13th

73 May 24 Comment Having been to the Masa Mara several times this is a spectacular sunset shot of the Mara - I am curious as to why you used f6 - but regardless, this is a great shot - I lightened the foreground just a touch in my VF May 9th
73 May 24 Comment Peter - terrific job with this image - "monochrome" works extremely well here, and I love the 18mm distortion, it really adds to the image - FYI - I removed three (3) eye-grabbers from the front of the opera house - two verticals that appear to be the back sides of the two circular signs and one vertical that appears to be the backside of a yield sign, but this website will not accept my VF if I try to submit more than one in a day - this happens to me repeatedly but - I'll try to upload it again tomorrow May 9th
73 May 24 Comment Ian - you succeeded! There is not much to say because as you may have surmised from reading my reviews I try refrain from commenting on the obvious (like the leading line that takes the viewer into the frame) - but said simply, this is very creative, and an excellent shot - thanks for sharing May 9th
73 May 24 Comment A beautiful shot Sherry, one you should be proud of - I'm also jealous (sort of) because I've never been to Iceland. I thought you handled the technical aspects of the image well but it doesn't quite pop - at first I thought because of the low light so I took it into the Nik Suite Color Efex and added the presets for Tonal Contrast, The Skylight Filter and then the Darken Lighten Center. I then cropped down and to the left from the upper right corner of the frame to move the COI a bit further away from the center - your thoughts on my edits are appreciated May 9th
