Xiao, hi, I'm visiting from Discussion Groups 55 & 73 and just wanted to see some bird images - your mockingbird image is in a word "Spectacular!" I've done a bit of bird shooting in the past and this one blows me away - congrats - come visit me at #55 and #73

Thank you Pauline, much appreciated. What it taught me and don't laugh, is, "keep your eyes open" - as I was driving into the South Rim all I could think about was the weather report while I was looking at the sky and wondering about my lightning trigger, what lens, etc. etc, i.e., my focus was on shooting lightning, when it occurred to me, "you have a shot right in front of you" so I pulled over. Unfortunately it wasn't the first time I've done that and missed shots and wanted to share an "aha" moment I had. Anyway, thank you for your very kind words. |

Thank you Rick - there's an old expression, "begin with the end in mind" and everything you referred to is exactly what I was trying to capture - great minds think alike :-) |

Thanks for your kind words - I used to do workshops with Gary Hart and Don Smith - then I just started heading down on my own - did you shoot with either of them? |

Where in Arizona? - I live in Tucson and was thinking of Picacho State Park for Mexican Poppies, but the ranger told me the crop isn't that great this year. I still may go back one day next week - I prefer weekdays to weekends for potential photographic hot spots |

In my opinion, technically, you did a great job. Having said that, if not for your written description I don't think I would have inferred the story you were after had you not told us. |

Absolutely terrific job of light painting - everything works in this image - one question, did you take any images of the camera from a lower perspective and looking directly into the lens? If so, would love to see those - but great job on how you light painted this one. |

I'm not a flower shooter, I try, but I'm just not good at it - however, I can recognize good flower shots and this is one - terrific job with the lighting and shading, the tone and mood of the image are exception and with the detail and exposure you nailed it, a sweetheart shot - excellent! |

Zina - I am unclear about your description - perhaps I'm not versed enough in PS but I don't see how you could get this image from the original in the corner - but obviously you did so, all I can say is wow - to me that's magical processing - phenomenal job.
The final image with the two facing each other is an absolute winning composition. A touch soft perhaps, but still a great image. |

Immediate impact and visual interest - a truly excellent image. I saw you shot this at f8, did you take any images using a smaller aperture for a greater DOF? Also did you consider focus stacking?
With the larger rocks in the foreground I can understand why you might now want those big rocks any sharper and thus draw from the primary subject - in any event, lots of options but still well composed and exposed. |

Thank you Peter - I was fortunate that I had excellent light, so there'a always a bit of fortuitousness in shots like these - the week before when I drove down it was cloudless (grrr) and the year before when I drove down twice it turned overcast, so as I said, I was fortunate. Your comments are much appreciated |

Thanks Ian - being recognized for a quality image was really important to me both then ... and now :-) - but I was relatively new and didn't understand the definition, but I learned something and had fun shooting so it was win - win, thanks for your comments. |

Thank you Gary - I lived 150 miles from the fields so timing was critical - I drove down three years in a row and was either too late or too early - this was the only year I caught them at their peak - thank you again for your comments |

Gary - my guess is you saw my modified version of the observatory but now I see someone else's image - I wish I could explain it but for some reason this site doesn't like how my computer or my iCloud server uploads - |

That's how I felt too, but a farmer planted those flowers, they did not come from nature - i.e., the hand of man :-( |

I just cropped in a touch, I just wanted to move the confluence of the road and fences a touch further away from the center - probably doesn't make much difference but I think it would score better in a photo club competition - regardless, this is an impactful shot |

Peter - once again wow, you do find some interesting and fascinating locations - There is so much to like about this image beginning with the mood - that said, sometimes I think less is more and in my VF I focused on what I consider to be the strengths of this image, i.e., the fog, the red buildings and the detail in the rock shoreline. Since PSA doesn't give us many pixels to work with I enhanced the image in LR to get more resolution, added tonal contrast in the Nik Suite and cropped in to focus on what I consider the most interesting aspects of the image - not necessarily better but certainly an option |

This is my second post because the site would not accept my VF - it grabbed an image from another member - hopefully it works this time |

Sherry - a lovely scene & peaceful scene for sure; and the image has a nice mood to it. Above to the left and right of your signature there appears to be some schmearing (is that a word?) Normally I don't like Generative Fill because it's fake, however, I used it here to 'eliminate and replace' those smudges for lack of a better word. Also, I added both texture and clarity in LR to help the image pop a bit more and then cropped down, as I felt there was a bit too much sky that drew the eye. |

Terrific shot Ian - I don't do IR, but images with this kind of impact certainly pique my curiosity about it. In my VF I offer an alternative - I thought there was a bit too much "negative space" or perhaps the lack of "weight" on the left side of the frame so I cropped up and in and placed the end of the road on a power point. Great shot! |

Gary, I'm familiar with the area, my daughter lives a mile or so away - what a terrific scenic shot with the city as a backdrop. For what it's worth, I really like this shot and kudos for taking it - I don't think this is the easiest shot to take and I really like how you handled it especially with the brighter background. At the same time I have offered an alternative in my VF - I open shadows in the foreground, in an attempt to get the viewer to focus on the observatory and I darkened and added contrast to the background - LMK if you like my suggested editing |
