Sorry I missed this the first time through Bunny. I love storytelling photos and this one tells a great story. I considered whether the skull might have been better placed completely under the horizon line, but the horn on the right leads the viewer through the entire landscape so I think your composition probably works best. Nice planning! |

Thanks, Ally. I believe you and I are both black and white fans; I actually envisioned most of the photos I took there as black and white - but in the end I found the color versions more compelling when I started editing. I think all that rust color is what did it. |

Thanks Carole. It was a fascinating place; it was so easy to start conjuring stories in my head as I took it all in. I can't imagine the lives of the men who worked there - in the blazing heat of Alabama in the middle of all those blast furnaces. The tour guide told us most men rarely worked there more than twenty years as it was such grueling labor and so hard on their bodies. |

A great of example of "near" and "far," and the framing of the two giraffes in the distance by that gentle curve of the near giraffe's neck is brilliant. And Silver FX remains a genius app for black and white; it is truly amazing it has held up so well through all these years compared to all the other photo editing programs. |

Lisa, this is such a peaceful photo. That stream running through the mountains on the right and the angles of the mountains still give it a little sense of movement.
I would say that if your son was standing it would be a less interesting photo, but I find the other two images just as compelling for different reasons. I actually get more of a sense of "near" and "far" from the second photo, since your son is looking off into the distance.
They have those same wonderful complementary colors that Carole's photo has, and I love the fact that your son's clothing fits with the color scheme! |

Carole, this is a wonderful photo. The photo is nicely composed, and as Bunny noted the complementary colors are a great addition. I had the opportunity to visit Lake Louise several years ago, and I would be hard pressed to name a more beautiful place. The canoes are clearly the main subject, then I discover that majestic hotel in the background, The diagonal lines created by the canoes and the pier give the photo some energy, something that is often missing from landscape photos. I ended up downloading the photo because I found myself wanting to play with the colors, but I never came up with anything that I felt was better than your original colors - just different. Your colors do remind of some of the old trademark film colors. |
