Hi Lance,
I thank you for your message and note your comments re Focus Stacking and I appreciate that you are not a fan of this system.

My experience having used this method over many years does exactly what you claim that it presents subjects with ultimate clarity which is my aim with total subject in focus. I view a flower in all its total natural beauty and it is my intention to capture same in a photograph. The DOF and bokeh are controlled by the "F stop" of which I am sure you are aware.

You are welcome to use "classic tradition" and I will continue to use Focus Stacking which by the way is an acceptable method used in Nature. Posted: 08/21/2023 01:37:35

24 Aug 23 Reply Hi Charissa,
Thank you for your message. I use Helicon Focus, which is a dedicated Focus Stacking program, and also Photoshop.

I can recommend both systems.

24 Aug 23 Comment Bearded irises are one of my favorite flowers.
They are the perfect subject, and here I repeat myself, focus stacking using F4-F5.6 will give you a great result.
May I suggest that if the opportunity is still available consider revisiting the arboretum and photograph the iris using the above.
I hope you don't mind I have included an image of a lemon iris using focus stacking. I find that isolating one iris filling most of the frame gives a good result.
I really encourage you to consider using this format. I use an Olympus EM1 with a 60ml macro lens on a tripod.

24 Aug 23 Comment I apologise for again raising focus stacking however this subject would be ideal for this system of flower photography.
The green background is perfect for a similar coloured flower in this image. The bokeh is great.

Well done.

24 Aug 23 Comment Well done in capturing the subject.

I agree with Bev that the background dominates and detracts from the subject.

24 Aug 23 Comment I agree with all of the above comments.
As I have previously commented that Focus Stacking would result in all of the subject being in focus.
Would you consider using this method?
Using the diagonal is great.

24 Aug 23 Comment Hi Charissa.
You have captured a beautiful subject. A mauve/majenta etc subject on a green background is ideal.
Would you consider cropping the right hand side and place the subject on the RHS line of thirds. As I see it the two flowers on RHS detract from your main subject.
Also would you consider darkening the background?
You may find that focus stacking would be a benefit showing all petals of your main subject.

24 Aug 23 Comment Hello to all members. My name is Frank Kennedy and I live in Victoria, Australia. Briefly my interest in flower photography covers many years. I always use a macro lens and believe focus stacking in RAW format is my preferred method. Post processing in Photoshop using ACR.
As I look at this image the subject has been well captured.
Bev - would you consider selecting the background and make a layer. Then duplicate the layer and use multiply(blending mode) then adjust from 1 strength upwards to where it suits you. Also I increased the contrast on subject (Layers preset Strength 1)
