Hi Peggy,
Thats quite an interesting subject you have there, certainly grabs the eye.
The obvious compositional element is the massive leading line, very strong ... the eye is drawn along the tree to the white cliff in the background. Unfortunately it is not super interesting back there... I wonder if there was something else was more interesting if you reversed position and shot back along the line to where this image was taken from? Possibly not? In which case you might have had your husband stand near the cliff face to give a target for the eye, and introduce a human element, this would also add a sense of scale.
Also, remember that a diaganol line in an image is a very strong element. Could you have angled the shot to get the log on the diaganol instead of straight up?
I love the colours and texture in the tree, in fact the overall warm colour palette has been nicely handled.
