49 Sep 23 Reply Good question David. I had assumed that as this was not a competition entry that it would be OK to modify.
I apologise if that was wrong.
I will check out what the ruling is here and see if it is OK to do this sort of thing.
Cheers

49 Sep 23 Comment Hi Allen,
An interesting tight portrait showing the depth of concentration by the subject. A good moment in time captured.
I agree with David about the clipping of the helmet, in fact I wonder if even a slightly tighter crop up from the bottom right to further strengthen the image would be worth investigating. However, having said that, the second image you posted is a very good environmental portrait showing the subject and the story around the moment.
In the first image, if the eyes could be lightened, and the background highlights dropped a little, I think the resulting image could be even more striking.
Great shots!

49 Sep 23 Comment Hi David,
Yes, I think this is an very good minimalist image that captures the viewers interest straight away.
The colours and strong forms in the image are striking.
I have taken the liberty to download and very quickly play with your image, as noted in the PDD guidlines, I hope that was OK.
You can see from my rushed edit, that I have taken the minimalism even further by removing a few of the smaller details, and thrown a slight vignette around the edges. I think this makes the image a bit stronger.
I think this is a nice composition, well cropped an well captured.

49 Sep 23 Reply Hi David / Owen,
Many thanks for your comments.
I must admit I had issues regarding the shutter speed of the shot. I was trying to balance a soft muted feel ( with water and people movement ) while trying to get a not over the top impressionist image with totally blurred movement.
I took a LOT of shots with different shutter speeds, and finally came dow to this one as the one a I liked best.
Cheers

49 Sep 23 Comment Hello Craig,
Like the others here, all I can say is WOW! Such an immediate strong impression. The final effect is so interesting that its hard not to keep looking for more and more detail in the shot.
At first viewing, I thought that a crop up and in from the bottom right would tighten the image. But then I thought that the detail and patterns in the floor are also interesting, and, there is also a curiosity generated by the imbalanced nature of the shot. Well done.
I will certainly be making my own attempt at this type of shot applying your process.

49 Sep 23 Comment Hello Owen,
The choice of subject and the close in nature of the photo certainly makes for a strong image. The effect is to grab the viewer's attention, I found myself wondering about the chap and what his life story is. A sign of a succcessfull shot!
A nicely out-of-focus background isolates the subject well, but as David has suggested, perhaps a darkening of the hgighlights would help the image further. I also note that the subject is looking out of the frame ( he is closer to the left border than the right ) and sometimes this can help to add "tension" to a photo, but in this instance I think that perhaps a crop on the right hand side in order to center ( or even bring the subject closer to the right hand border ) would improve the feel of the shot.
A good off-guard moment captured well. Congratulations.
