Thanks Hoshedar. :) For lighting, I have my own non-patented lighting tool: an old torch (US flashlight?) with a fairly white light, and tissue paper wrapped over it to soften the light even further. There is then a 'lens hood' type of arrangement made of black card so the main light is not picked up when being waved in, up to and around the 'set' in the near dark in the garage. All very basic and good fun. :) |

Thanks Tom. It'll either be very different or just very out of place...!!! We shall see! :) |

Yes, I think even those of us who really are into still life are getting a bit stir crazy from being indoors! It doesn't seem to have stopped raining for weeks and weeks! :) |

I rather agree with Gaetan here. Exposure is good (sun and snow!) and the crocus is tack sharp, with a real 'zing' about it. But a lot of other, less exciting stuff around. I'd crop tight - putting the crocus on the rule of thirds intersection to really make it the star of the show/photo. |

Nice enough shot with good exposure etc. Shame you couldn't have asked the guy to move a bit to the left so he wasn't quite so central! But such is life. |

I think the rhino is just fab - great position, great pose. Also great environment.
The road leads us up and through the image beautifully but then we find....a jeep which, once seen, can't be 'unseen' and which then draws the eye. I'd probably remove the jeep so the road winds on and away into the distance...leaving just the rhino and nature (unless you are entering in a competition where this is not allowed, in which case I'd just desaturate as much a possible to help it 'hide' in the background). I love the blurry background, and the softness at the front is not a problem as that front right tree (the blurriest) still serves as a great frame for the rhino. Nice! |

I'm glad you got a photo out of this which makes you happy, and that the judge loved it also. But I'm afraid I find the colours too strange and strong for the subject matter. I did a quick edit into black and white which I think is interesting.... Attached just for you to see. |

Dramatic! Good impactful composition and great sky. Only one thing - you have a bit of a halo round the lighthouse - probably due to the dehaze which can cause this effect. It could be worth checking if you are thinking of competitions etc. If only for you, then, that will not matter. :) |

This is clearly a nicely done photo with even light and great smoke, but most still life's tend to view the objects straight on, rather than looking down. Having so many near flat items is obviously a bit triky. So how about: just doing all the object without the candle, or the candle lying near the candlestick and turning it into a true 'flat lay' image? Just a thought. Alternatively, can you prop the items up more and take a full frontal image which is more traditional? Again, just another thought. Incidentally, are you aware of the PSA talk (free) this Saturday on Food still life? I imagine if you search for "Food Palette: A Photographer's Feast in Still Life" you will find it, if still life really is your thing. :) |
