Cindy, I really like this photograph. Great details that show off the animal more than the naked eye would see. My take was to darken the background some, lighten the eyes (LrC, brush tool, no feather, add exposure and contrast). I horizontally flipped so it was looking right (our eye movement, not sure it helps, doesn't hurt) and gave it a little more room in front (photoshop, AI crop expansion). I increased the exposure on the nose. I do not mind using this tool when I am not adding any content other than more plain background. Look forward to what you get next month! |

Craig, nice photograph of the Herons ignoring each other. Since this is not a "nature" photo I took the liberty to remove the foliage in front of the right bird's beak. I recropped to remove the bushes on the bottom and added a little space in front of each bird. Also, darkened the background a little. Why do these birds perch so far into the bushes when we try to photograph them? |

David, great photograph, in focus, nice crop and the story of the Redwing "squawking" as they alway do. I always like to face my birds looking right (some folk feel that since we write left to right, our eyes like it. Anyway it does not hurt) and I remove some of the branches, I thought they were a little distracting (a quick fix now in photoshop) |

As I posted this, Butch's comments came up. Not sure why the time stamp on mine is two hours later and did not see where the 800mm lens was mentioned? And I also concur with Butch'e critique. |

Deborah, nice shot of the eagle taking off. The copy you posted and I was able to view is very low resolution, so a bit hard to evaluate (no camera data provided). It looks like there is dirt in the air that the eagle kicked up which, to me was a little distracting. My take would be a little more crop. Would like to see this photograph at a higer resolution. |

You submitted a quaility photo with nice postproduction. And I think Butch gave you a great critique. Since the background is still quite busy, you may consider cropping a little more. It also seemed a little tilted, so I rotated it a counter clockwise some. |

As you have both noticed, this image has been processed (included is the raw file) by "Topaz super focus". "Topaz Super Focus is designed to sharpen images intelligently by analyzing textures, edges, and fine details. Unlike traditional sharpening techniques that apply uniform contrast enhancement, Topaz Photo AI uses AI-driven technology to selectively improve focus, minimizing noise and artifacts". As Peter noticed it left some artifacts in the background and as Butch noted, it gave a "visual coldness" to the image. I like the ability to enhance my photos with denoise and sharpening, that adjust the pixels the camera captures, but I think "super focus" may add/change that content. I will be interested in how future photo competitions address this new technology and your opinions. |

Butch, I really appreciate you bringing a "discussion image" for us to think about. I am also doing my best to get a new perspective on my wildlife photography. I think your approach has lots of potential. If you had been able to shoot off a dozen or so of these shots, I think you would have gotten the wing and foot position (right foot folded) in a better perspective and sense of motion with the blured wing tips. I liked the cactus, I think it gave a focused visual base for the bird to take off from. In my image, I decreased the saturation and increased the vibrance to try and give some more texture to the breast area (maybe only if any a little change). I also added a little space top and right for the bird to fly into. I look forwad to more comments on this image! |

The more I study photography, the more I relize how many different stories can be told with the same photo. Butch's VR brings some elegance to the interaction of these birds. Yours, the dynamic of animal competition. My crop, a different take on species interaction. All versions of compelling interest in bird behavior! |

Peter, I completely agree with Butch. A great photograph. My take is not necessarily an improvement, but rather a differant perspective, adding to the anticipation of "I am going to fly into that space". On Butch's recommendation, I brightened the head a little. |
